  1. I mean, if gatekeeping means something so general that all language becomes gatekeeping, it doesn't really mean much to say something is gatekeeping
  2. If you can point to an author not getting published because of any number of irrelevant reasons, especially ones as obviously bigoted as race, that absolutely would be gatekeeping. Classification for discussion itself is not though, otherwise you might as well call all classification of literature gatekeeping.
  3. I don't think it reads that way, or rather I don't think it clearly reads that way. I'll be glad if they do have something different and low-latency to use it purely as a controller though, so we'll see!
  4. I still don't think that's gatekeeping Gatekeeping is keeping people or something from benefiting from a system that you don't want them/it in irrespective of the merits. There's no effect or system being withheld with a more nuanced classification system of literature. There's nothing even derogatory if someone classifies a work as "space fantasy" but not "scifi". I think all the people discussing the idea here deeply enjoy instances of all of them.
  5. It's not "gate keeping" to seek more nuanced descriptions and categorization
  6. I'm not sure it's that cut and dry. The FAQ says Remote play is a bit different; that means wireless streaming stuff on your PC to the steam deck and isn't quite the same as using it as a USB/wireless controller. In particular, you may have to deal with latency issues and the screen would be used for the video. Now, maybe they have a more custom low-bandwidth low-latency mode where you really just want it as a controller and not stream video at all, but the FAQ feels a bit ambiguous about what this would be.
  7. Those are very positive reviews. I suppose I'll have to temporarily get Apple TV and judge for myself.
  8. Bayonetta 3 was easily the highlight for me. But I'll also be all over StarFox 64.
  9. Man, on the one hand, do not want. But the reality is it means we'll see more games supported, so yay?
  10. I did have a lot of friends who had wrecked N64 controllers, but somehow I never had this problem. The worst my controller got was no worse than any other controller I've bought till today, and I owned 4 for multiplayer games. Maybe I was just very lucky, but I do wonder if the impression that they were bad was due to most of us playing it in an our earlier years when maybe people were more likely to be unnecessarily rough
  11. I agree, by today's polished standards it's bad, but it set the stage for so much. Analog, triggers, and rumble stand out.
  12. Nice! New England is a great place, but you are 100% correct that the roads are total dog shit. Although it's not just the marking of the roads, but the potholes that really make me loathe them!
  13. Phew sounds like it's solid! I feel like too many games I want to play have all just come out, so I'm not sure when I"ll get to this, but it's a definite purchase. * Tales of Arise (I'm toward the end, but not there yet) * Death Loop * Kena * DIIR
  14. Yeah, I also think there should be more nuanced classifications in which Dune falls into something like "science fantasy." It doesn't try to convey a plausible future of humanity, but it uses fantastical technology as a tool to explore human elements (in this case, at the societal and political scale). I would be perfectly happy calling it "science fantasy" at least.
  15. If he does a good job it shouldn't be a "dumb scifi," unless your definition for dumb is anything other than hard scifi. To me, a dumb scifi would be movies like Lucy.
  16. Presumably it is a performance increase in a manner of speaking. Rendering at a higher resolution than your native resolution and then down sampling is one of the best (or maybe the best?) forms of AA. So one thing you could imagine doing for better AA on your 4K res is using DLSS from 4K to 8K and then downsampling back to your native 4K res. Presumably DLAA is more efficient than that though and more efficient than true 8K rendering downsmapled to 4k.
