  1. I haven't seen it yet, but while this is co-writer/director Josh Boone's approved cut, he's explained that the movie is made up of 75% of the footage they intended to shoot. The last 25% to be done during normally scheduled reshoots never happened because it was after principal photography but before reshoots that the movie started getting futzed around with in terms of finishing it and releasing it so Josh Boone didn't get to shoot a fourth, theoretically, of the material he intended to. Disney let him go back to cut the movie with additional money to finish all the special effects shots and stuff much more recently but Boone still never got to do those planned reshoots, so that may have affected the quality of the film to some degree. At least we're getting his preferred cut. He has explained that he debated doing reshoots under Disney but that it would have been impossible because the actors had so obviously aged out of their characters at that point. So, this is what we get. I am looking forward to his The Stand miniseries adaptation though coming in December.
  2. Well, we do have Arcega-Whiteside and Greg Ward, who both showed themselves can be quality when needed. Robert Davis and Quez Watkins should be back for week 1 and Deontay Burnett and John Hightower can be good too. We'll see though . . .
  3. Fuck yeah, rare moment where a white guy honestly deserves genuine credit. In that industry, to rise to that level must have been Herculean.
  4. Great film, I love how surreal and strange it is, particularly for an anime. It's also the rare time a foreigner (in this case, a white guy) directed the film, Michael Arias, who was a big fan of the original manga it's based on. 7/10 seems kind of low, but it's an older movie now (I have it on bluray, great transfer) so maybe 7/10 makes more sense. Writer/director Kelly Reichardt is a great filmmaker.
  5. I just hate restating my overall feelings on something with every new thread rather than solely just commenting on the newest news about the thing. Feels best to always have in one place. If there is a Dune thread, I thought there was.
  6. Saw this earlier - definitely amped! Probably should be in the other Dune thread though?
  7. Paul Schrader can be very good (he recently did the excellent First Reformed with Ethan Hawke) but he's been bad more often than good in the last two decades. His early work is phenomenal though. He's like Lucas and Coppola and a lot of artists that way. Also, IGN doesn't mean much, but they loved it. The specific reviewer Siddhant Adlakha, has written at BMD and /Film, so he's legit. Apparently Ridley directs the first two episodes (the review reviews the first three episodes). https://www.ign.com/articles/raised-by-wolves-review-hbo-max-spoiler-free
  8. I know, no one reads my posts. It's like, I tried to say, it's the Galaxy Quest guy! Which doesn't mean a home run since his other directorial work doesn't reach Quest's level, which is why I also posted about the writers, actors, etc. You got to have all the pieces in place when no one piece is crazy talented (like having a Tarantino directing or a Charlie Kaufman writing the movie).
  9. True, I agree, but that's probably far more thanks to director Denis Villenueve than Aaron Guzikowski, which is why it's important to look at his entire body of work, which still confirms this could be good! I similarly had 0% interest in this until I read up on the actual creative staff involved, and I was like: "definitely at least keep an eye on". Always good to check the writers/directors! If it helps, he's just directing the pilot and executive producing, I believe.
  10. I'm about an hour in and all I'll say is that so far it really feels like a compelling meld of Alan Wake and Control. Alan Wake's tone and atmosphere are absolutely imported here, with even stronger Lynchian; Twin Peaks-vibes. Everyone's favorite tortured writer is back, visually played by his previous visual model and still voiced by his previous voice actor. Control definitely feels different with Alan Wake brought in - but only in good ways so far. For those not familiar or don't remember Alan Wake well (I brushed up beforehand), you definitely might want to read a plot summary for the original game, it's two expansions, and the spin-off Alan Wake's American Nightmare. They are all referenced here. But I think for those not in the know, like Jesse herself, perhaps it'll be an even more confusing experience, which is kind of the point of Alan Wake's subjective, surreal reality. It is important to adjust expectations though - this is very much a Control game first and an Alan Wake sequel second - but you can feel (at least so far) that Remedy is testing the waters to perhaps make a full-blown sequel at some point.
  11. Control's second and final story expansion add-on, AWE, which brings Alan Wake into the game, came out today. As a big Alan Wake fan, I'm excited and will be playing it this weekend. Almost done with The Foundation, the first expansion.
  12. The final remaster for Age of Empires before we finally get Age of Empires IV by Relic Entertainment and World's Edge. Microsoft really followed a plan with reviving this series by doing remasters of the whole series before dropping the fourth game. This remaster, by comparison, is being done by Forgotten Empires studio, who did the definitive editions for Age of Empires I and Age of Empires II, which is a good sign. They are getting backup from Tantalus Media, who helped them with Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition as well. Obviously these definitive editions are supervised by World's Edge as well.
  13. Ridley Scott directing the pilot is cool, but I doubt he's otherwise very involved at all. Who matters here is primary writer and showrunner Aaron Guzikowski, who solely wrote the films Contraband, Prisoners, and the remake of Papillon. He also wrote and showran The Red Road (with Jason Mamoa). That's a pretty interesting resume, so I am cautiously optimistic about this show.
  14. You're right, while the Honest Trailers didn't go into those issues, I definitely had at least some of these issues as well when I first watched it. It's all part of the "this movie is dumb" aspect to me.
  15. I still feel the same why - this should tell you how hard it is for me to listen to myself on this. I know the futility, but yet, I persist.
  16. I mean, the plot makes sense, it's just stupid. I love the movie, but the Honest Trailers for this film is particularly on point in explaining the plot and in every one of its criticisms is accurate.
  17. Tammy Cruise makes me want to go to a movie theater. Damn him! I won't succumb . . . unless I had Tammy Cruise money.
