That's correct, a startup electric carmaker that's only just this year started to turn a regular profit is worth more than Toyota, VolkswagenGroup, Honda and Daimler, with a market cap valued at about $185 billion. In fact, Tesla is now worth more than General Motors, Fordand Fiat Chrysler Automobiles combined.

TwinIon
I think that Tesla has more potential than the established car makers. With a direct sales strategy, a solid lead in battery technology, and relatively low overhead, if I had to bet on one car brand making a lot more money in a few years than it's currently making now, I think Tesla is a reasonable bet. That's essentially what the stock market is indicating with this. In terms of absolutes though, yeah, it seems pretty stupid that a company that sold 360k cars last year is worth more than a company that sold 10 million. PaladinSolo
Its not their cars, rumors have been circulating for a while they have a battery that will last 1 million miles in the works, which has millions of applications besides cars, the whole car thing is to show off their real product which is batteries. LazyPiranha
Anyone with a decent background in physics that could explain to me how a battery could possibly hold that much charge?

Not in a single charge, but over its lifetime, which is 2-3x longer than current batteries, which is a huge deal. Current batteries degrade pretty heavily something like 10% a year based on the average recharging cycles, this battery they're claiming will stay at 95% capacity even after thousands of charge cycles, which would be a massive leap. If they are just a car company they are way overvalued if they are a tech company then it might not be far off the mark.

The million mile battery was designed by China CATL and they contracted for 2 years to provide Tesla the batteries. https://www.scmp.com/tech/big-tech/article/3087952/million-mile-battery-china-could-power-your-electric-car https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-06-07/a-million-mile-battery-from-china-could-power-your-electric-car?sref=iAWraYPK
