Washington (AFP) - President Donald Trump's son published on Wednesday the name of the alleged anonymous whistleblower whose complaint fired the impeachment inquiry against Trump, breaking strict conventions for protecting officials who reveal wrongdoing in government.

Strict conventions? Is there no law?

AFP could not independently verify the whistleblower's identity and is not publishing the name.

But the revelation by the president's son comes as the White House seeks to discredit the mounting impeachment effort in Congress against Trump, painting it as driven by politics.

"There is no Whistleblower. There is someone with an agenda against Donald Trump," the president tweeted on Monday.

Standing beside Trump at a political rally in Kentucky Monday, Republican Senator Rand Paul threatened to expose the person and demanded they testify in Congress.

"We also now know the name of the whistleblower... I say tonight to the media, do your job and print his name."

Andrew Bakaj, the whistleblower's lawyer, would not confirm or deny the reported name, but said Trump Jr. and others were endangering the person as well as the system built to protect whistleblowers.

"Identifying any name for the whistleblower will simply place that individual and their family at risk," he told AFP.

How does someone not in government know the whistleblower? Fredo may not have broken the law here but I can't imagine that the person who told him wasn't breaking a law.

The name he tweeted out was apparently put out by some conservative rag last week.

Well, replace "whoever told Fredo" with "whoever the ultimate source for this information is". Someone had to be breaking the law.

The article that originally put the name out surmised the identity based on other information that was made available. It certainly could be true that the name was illegally divulged, but the information that was already out there didn’t seem to be enough to break any unmasking laws but was also specific enough to narrow down the potential people to a very short list.

Still, poor form for people to be spreading the name around whether he is the guy or not, or whether it is legal/illegal.

The mainstream press was definitely irresponsible in providing enough information to start zeroing in on who the whistleblower is but we know the House Republicans have been trying to get the whistleblower's name onto the record in the closed hearings. My bet would be on one of them giving the name to a right-wing rag to give cover to everyone else publicly naming him.

Breitbart and The Federalist have been tweeting about him for over a week.

Iirc whistleblower protections are only professional and job related protections, and don't necessarily prevent a legislator from outing them

I think this is correct. Not being an awful person is the only thing stopping a legislator.
