Qurator comes from filmmaker Thomas Eromose Ikimi (Legacy: Black Ops) and actor Brandon Victor Dixon (Hamilton, NBC's Jesus Christ Superstar). These days, it seems like every time a movie comes out with a lead actor who isn't a straight white male, its Rotten Tomatoes audience review score is bombarded with trolls who bring down the Audience Score with reactionary hate speech and whining complaints about "SJW" agendas. Whether it's Black Panther, Captain Marvel, or the Daisy Ridley-led Star Wars films, the Audience Score on many big blockbusters is an unreliable metric for judging the quality of a film. That's where Qurator comes in. The new app doesn't just let users post reviews and tip the scales of a particular movie on a whim. In an ingenious tactic, users must play a trivia game in order to rate a film. It's a 60-second quiz, and questions are pulled at random from a pool of potentially dozens or more, depending on the movie. Score a 51 or higher on the 100 point quiz, and you get to rate the film. However, there are four tiers of victory, with the higher tiers given more weight when averaging the scores together. If users fail the quiz, they get one more chance, but must score 75 or more in order to review. There are way too many simple sentence reviews and buzzword packed statements when movies first come out, and rarely do people looking for a fair review ever actually get a real accounting for how good or bad a movie is from those published reviewers who use said reviews and statements. And with this new website, instead of taking a quiz so I can have the honor of adding to another person's website review score, it's easier for me to talk about a movie here with the people that don't have me ignored (if there are any left...) I mean unless something has like a fucking 13% rating or 3.5 on IMDB or whatever, I just don't pay attention. Blue Velvet is shit according to Amazon Prime's users for example. Probably the most offended I've ever been by any rating/review. And this site sounds stupid. I'm certainly not pro-review-bombing-fuck-the-SJWs but the mention of a quiz immediately made my mind jump to a PC-purity test which would actually be really funny I guess. Amazon reviews are different, they review the product not really the content so if the Blu-ray release for Blue Velvet was bad (Shitty transfer, not worth upgrading from DVD release or if there was a better Blu-ray version) those are things that would interest me and possibly warrant the low score. I actually never thought of this somehow...but I was referring to the Amazon Prime ratings specifically when, say, viewed on a Smart TV. Are those ratings the same as the website product ratings or purely the content? Edit: Just checked the site, they're not. So the product reviews are separate. TwinIon Posted September 5, 2019 Share Posted September 5, 2019 I feel like people try to sound so above it all when talking about critics or review scores, but I tend to find them pretty useful. I'm probably going to see Ad Astra regardless of what critics or audiences think of it, and when I hear Mother! got an F cinemascore, I was even more excited to see it, but when a movie that could easily go either way gets decent reviews, I'm much more likely to check it out. When I see Booksmart with a 97%, it's an extra incentive to reserve a seat. When The Kitchen gets a 21%, I'll probably skip it unless I hear or read something to the contrary. I'm not dogmatic about it; I read message boards, listen to podcasts, and have friends that see lots of movies, but reviews are an easy early filter. That said, I personally tend to find that critics reviews are far more in line with my taste than the audience scores. The problem that Qurator is trying to solve is audience scores, and I think they're correct that those numbers are too easily manipulated, I'm just not sure how useful their filter will be. It's not just trolling that is the problem. It's fanboys for actors or franchises or directors or studios. It's random review bombing for the luls. It's people reviewing the trailer. How would a quiz stop people from review bombing the next comic book movie when they can probably guess the major twists trailer unseen? How about the next Disney remake?
