What is your favorite castlevania game?

I think you misunderstood my sentence, not your fault as I should have wrote it better. I'm saying my favorite is Rondo. I tend to like the more classic style of Castlevania games then the Metroidvania titles in the series. This includes SOTN which didn't really click with me in the past (I think it's maybe because I got way too hardcore into Super Metroid then after that didn't care for games of a similar style).

Interesting. I didn’t at first play Super Metroid because it looked like Metroid 16 bit remake. So going in on SOTN it hadn’t been since Metroid. Also it wasn’t just the first time play through. It was continuing to learn new things about it years later. 32 bit pixel art is great.

Probably something like this:

1. Symphony of the Night

2. Castlevania III

3. Super Castlevania IV

I think Rondo is a great game but I never found it as enjoyable as these to play. I also really dig Circle Of The Moon. The magic system (or whatever they call it) and actual difficulty are great.

DDS.

And I really respect your choices. SC4 is overrated IMO...but I know it impacted a lot of people back in its day. Plus it’s one of the easiest to finish in the series, so it’s pretty fun to revisit once in a while. Just wish there wasn’t so much fluff to it.

Its hard to name better games than Symphony of the Night and Dracula’s Curse, though. Excellent picks, there!

SC4 was the first game for me where I truly noticed a specific atmosphere, or where the concept of an atmosphere dawned on me rather. It holds a really special place for me because of that. I absolutely love that one stage where you're ascending the waterfalls to that serene soundtrack.

I actually agree that purely gameplay-wise, it's not spectacular. Symphony is also way too easy but I just love the experiences of these two.

Castlevania III is just fucking good all around and in general has my favorite aesthetic after Symphony. Good god is that game hard though. Even with the 10 lives cheat, it was a true test of will to beat that one.

Right on. And yeah, Dracula’s Curse is challenging...though I’m “lucky” to have been playing it since the 7th grade so I’ve figured out how to make it through the game in one sitting now. #humblebrag

:p

Fastest way for me is the “high roads”, pick up Sypha on the way, then just basically wreck house with her magic spells!

Loved Los.... The hate it received was totally off base.

Take Castlevania out of the title and it's just another okay God of War clone with some great voice acting. It's thoroughly forgettable, especially as a Castlevania game. It didn't have the music or  the feel, or much of anything, really.

I think the real problem with that game was that it was yet another 3D Castlevania fail and it had a lot riding on it.

I mean, it was a competent board-room type of game but also a brazen pastiche of every well-received game of its era. The overall feel and aesthetic was all over the place with no coherence and certainly no Castlevania flair. I kind of hate the game for driving yet another mediocre-at-best nail into the 3D Castlevania coffin. And what do they do with the second one? Double down on showcasing how little they understand the series.

Best 3D Castlevania for my money is Bloodborne. It may not have platforming but fuck is that game everything I always wanted that to be.

Perfectly said, except for the Bloodborne part. :p

I don't hate Bloodborne, I've never played it. I just know those games aren't for me.
