Take-Two Interactive, the owner of Grand Theft Auto 6 developer Rockstar Games, and Remedy Entertainment, the studio behind Alan Wake 2, are locked in a trademark dispute over their R-depicting logos.

As first reported by RespawnFirst, Take-Two filed a trademark dispute against Remedy in the United Kingdom over the rebranded logo it released last year. Its logo now solely depicts the letter R, or is sometimes styled with "Remedy" underneath, which Take-Two seemingly believes is too similar to Rockstar's own R logo.

What makes this trademark dispute even more bizarre is the fact Remedy and Rockstar Games are working together on the Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne remakes. The two parties signed a new publishing agreement back in 2022 to remake the first two Max Payne games for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S, with Remedy handling development and Rockstar financing the project.

How can anyone own the concept of a logo based on a letter -- and prevent anyone else from doing a completely different looking one based on that same letter?

Probably some lawyer thing where if you're not seen fighting for your copyright then you can lose it. Remember they own The Elder Scrolls, Bethesda sued Mojang for the game Scrolls (now Caller's Bane), which everyone knew was stupid, but was more than likely just an attempt to look like Bethesda was trying to hold onto their copyright, even though they knew it was a frivolous legal battle.

This is funny cuz this isn't the first time Remedy has had someone take issue about their logo...

Remedy's original logo, designed by Henri Loikkanen, was introduced in July 1996.[4] Its resemblance to LucasArts' logo prompted LucasArts to threaten with legal action, resulting in its removal in July 1998.[5]

Is this like when that company was suing everyone for using “Edge” in the name or title? Claiming they had to show they were trying to protect their copyright so they didn’t lose it.

R* knows they won’t win, but they have to take on this losing battle so they can win ones more blatant down the line?
