So, often the backlash on the internet to something isn’t real, but the conservative backlash to a lesbian couple kissing in this film seems to be quite real.

Regional sales data is pretty compelling here and explains why Lightyear was so far off projections. I’ve never had as many whiny posts and messages on our theater FB pages as with this film and the kiss.

We’ve been insta-banning anybody who throws the word grooming out there. Don’t want that nonsense.

OOC, do you think the response would have been as strong without right wing media making it a thing?

You mean Evans.

Haven't seen it yet. Will probably end up waiting for it to be on D+

Evans, yeah, my bad.

I haven’t had time to watch it, but it has generally been well received by my patrons.

The voice is another piece of the completely manufactured opposition by right wing folks. They claim that Chris Evan’s “replaced” Tim Allen due to his politics, which is just false. You can disagree with the decision, but it was an artistic one.

It won't stop me from watching (when it's streaming), I don't know reasoning, but it doesn't sound right to me. Definitely not a major problem, it just doesn't feel like Buzz to me when he speaks.

I think the right media made a concerted effort to frame this not simply as content a person may not want, but part of the “agenda” of Disney to gay-up your kids AND/OR thumb their noses at conservatives. The consistency of messaging in the complaints is too precise to be anything other than this media manipulation at work.

Gross, thanks.

Was there really any serious coverage or push about boycotting the movie? The only thing I remember seeing on this were reports that some countries, especially in the Middle East, were not letting the movie be played there. The only real controversy I recall here were people being upset that Evans was doing the voice and not Allen

Definitely. The right wing MTG/Cruz types went all in on it.

Absolutely. One of the top conservative media companies, Daily Wire, had been making a huge stink about it and used it and other Disney actions as a launching pad for their newly announced DW Kids production house.

These are also the types of oysters pushing the “replacement of Tim Allen for his politics” fake news

That sounds like Tommy Tallarico thinking he can take on Nintendo with the Amico while telling people the switch is a pornogaphry console 😆 You're making sales for the competition, Tommy.

You take back what you said about oysters.

Having now watched it, the most accurate thing I’ve read about it is “THIS is the Pixar movie that should have been straight to D+”

It is 100% OK

Are parents even bringing their kids into theaters in huge numbers? What animated features have even done that well in theaters in this COVID world?

I’m seeing big family attendance for the stuff like MCU flicks and Jurassic. Not as much the cartoons, though Sing 2 was decent. I think Minions 2 may be the first big hit for animated fare.

In that case, sounds like families are willing to make the trek to theaters when it's something everyone can enjoy but maybe not so much when it's just for the kids.

I wonder what it is about Sing 2 that brought families in over Encanto. Encanto was a far better movie with much better music. I guess I wonder if the promise of a quick Disney+ release is hurting their box office numbers; at least when it comes to movies that don't necessarily benefit from the big screen.

My biggest problem with the movie is the time dilation. In relation to people on the planet It took Buzz longer to travel around the star at near light speed, than if he was travel significantly slower.

Yeah, that part is weird. I'm thinking of the movie Voices of a Distant Star and the time dilation was handled by just having the protagonist simply travel away from Earth in a straight line.

Finally watched this over the weekend with the kids. Yeah, I'm with @sblfilms on this. This is the Pixar movie that should have gone straight to D+. That this got a theatrical release and Turning Red didn't is a travesty. Turning Red is a true fun for the whole family movie. My son enjoyed Lightyear, my girls and I were meh on it.

I haven’t watched a Pixar film since the excellent TS3. I need to rectify this and catch up.

Oh no. That means you've missed Coco, TS4, Turning Red, Incredibles 2, Inside Out, Soul, and... Luca. Yeah, there were other movies in between there, but who cares about those other ones.

Just as a stroll down memory lane:

Pixar films since Inside Out (2015):

-The Good Dinosaur

-Finding Dory

-Cars 3

-Coco

-Incredibles 2

-Toy Story 4

-Onward

-Soul

-Luca

-Turning Red

-Lightyear

Disney Animation Studios films since Frozen (2013):

-Big Hero 6

-Zootopia

-Moana

-Ralph Breaks the Internet

-Frozen II

-Raya and the Last Dragon

-Encanto

Been interesting to see how both studios have progressed since those two enormous hits (Inside Out and Frozen). You can see Pixar's been pumping out more films and faster than Walt Disney Animation Studios has. I think I've honestly liked more of Disney Animation's films than Pixar's. Big Hero 6, Zootopia, Raya, and Encanto were all pretty great. I was just fine on Moana, but I know a lot of people loved that one. I haven't seen Frozen II or Ralph Breaks the Internet. But most of those Pixar films listed I was pretty lukewarm on for the most part.

Disney Animation studios has definitely had the superior line up overall, though I think of all the movies listed between both studios Coco is my favorite

The Good Dinosaur - Terrible

Finding Dory - Fun but forgettable fluff

Cars 3 - Super Lame, but I hate this franchise

Coco - Loved it

Incredibles 2 - A fun watch, but ultimately a very disappointing and unnecessary sequel to one of my favorite movies of all time

Toy Story 4 - A fun enjoyable watch, but also kinda not needed

Onward - Fun but forgettable fluff

Soul - Didn't really land with me, but a decent flick

Luca - Really didn't land with me, boring and formulaic

Turning Red - Loved It

Lightyear - Have Not Seen

Big Hero 6 - This Movie rubbed me the wrong way and I kind of hate it, but I know my opinion is an outlier.

Zootopia - Fun movie

Moana - Have not seen

Ralph Breaks the Internet - Hated It, LOVE LOVE LOVE the first and this felt like a completely pointless followup

Frozen II - Have not seen

Raya and the Last Dragon - Fun but forgettable fluff

Encanto - Have not seen

Most of these movies are still better than most of their accurate contemporaries. Really, the only big animation studio matching Disney and Pixar right now is Netflix Animation. Since they've opened their doors, they've had Klaus, The Willoughbys, Arlo the Alligator Boy, and very recently Sea Beast. Their next bunch of movies should be great, too. Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio, Henry Selick's Wendell and Wild, Nora Twomey's My Father's Dragon. That's quite the lineup of creatives there.

Well, if we're sharing assholes here...

Spoiler

The Good Dinosaur - I'd prefer to forget this one

Finding Dory - Fun and mindless. I never need to see this again

Cars 3 - The only entry that felt like it had a story to tell, still not great

Coco - Amazing

Incredibles 2  - Super fun and enjoyable. I remember nothing of this movie, though. There was a hacker and a motorcycle

Toy Story 4 - I really liked this movie. The message isn't a natural continuation from Toy Story 3, but it sure feels like it when I watch my kids play their toys

Onward - Very eh. I remember virtually nothing of this

Soul - Wildly well done, but I had a really hard time getting passed how much I disliked Joe. Also, I know 22 is raceless, but it makes me feel a bit of discomfort watching the white woman in Tina Fey know how to be a better person when in the shoes of a black man. Like, maybe they could have found a different actress here.

Luca - Quite enjoyed it, even if I know it won't stick with me.

Turning Red - Incredible

Lightyear - Big meh

Big Hero 6 - Really liked this one. Just a great cast of characters, all around

Zootopia - Really liked this one too, and this time I found it memorable

Moana - I really love this movie. Also, the best Disney sound track until Encanto

Ralph Breaks the Internet - I forget this is a movie until I'm reminded by a list like this. It was, eh

Frozen II - Far better than the first and this time with actually good music. Not great, but still let's go with above average

Raya and the Last Dragon - Good, but I don't really need to watch it again

Encanto - So, so very good. One of Disney's best musicals ever and certainly my favorite Disney sound track
