If you have a Top 10 for superhero films, what would it be?

Recommended Posts

This was more difficult than I thought....

Blade
The Crow
Guardians of the Galaxy
Thor: Ragnarok
Deadpool
The Rocketeer
The Incredibles
The Punisher (Thomas Jane)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990)
Batman: Mask of the Phantasm

The above 10 are ones i've watched so many times I can recite them

These 3 didn't fit, but wanted to mention them because I seriously struggled with the list
Captain America: The First Avenger
The Dark Knight

Mystery Men

In No Order

The Crow

Mask of the Phantasm

Batman Beyond Return of the Joker

Winter Soldier

Batman ‘89

Batman Begins

Dark Knight

Man of Steel

Scott Pilgrim

Spectacular Spiderman (super cheating)

The whole Cadmus Arc of Justice League Unlimited is also one of my favorite Superhero things ever

I'd have to think about it a bit, but off the top of my head:

TDK

Batman Begins

The Avengers

X2

Spider-man 2

If you have a broader definition and include non-Comicbook films The Incredibles is right towards the top. The Matrix would be as well if you consider it in the same category.

I would consider Incredibles a super hero film, I don't know about The Matrix.

Doing these top 10 is pretty hard.  How I felt about some of the older movies when I first saw them would change now if I re-watched it and compared them to newer offerings.  I was a teen when Spider-Man 1 and 2 came out, and they were the greatest love stories for my sappy little emotional ass, but the last time I re-watched them I the flaws were more obvious.  And I don't think I've watched Batman '89 and Returns since I was in high school, lol.

Edit:  I attempt to loosely rank every superhero movie I've seen and have some memory of.  Live action only.

Excellent:

Thor: Ragnarok

Avengers: Infinity War

The Dark Knight

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Black Panther

Logan

Great:

Batman Begins

Avengers: Endgame

Captain America: Civil War

Deadpool

Iron Man 3

Deadpool 2

Spider-Man 2

Iron Man

Captain America: The First Avenger

Guardians of the Galaxy

X-Men: First Class

X-Men: Days of Future Past

Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2

Good:

Thor (personal favorite)

Ant Man

Doctor Strange

The Avengers

Spider-Man: Homecoming

Spider-Man: Far From Home

Still good:

Spider-Man

Batman ('89)

Superman

Superman II

Aquaman

Wonder Woman

Shazam!

Captain Marvel

Ant Man & The Wasp

X2: X-Men United

Blade

Good... but with problems:

Avengers: Age of Ultron

Zack Snyder's Justice League

Man of Steel

Birds of Prey: ...Harley Quinn

Iron Man 2

Watchable:

The Incredible Hulk

Thor: The Dark World

The Wolverine

Suicide Squad

Hellboy

Hellboy II: The Golden Army

X-Men

Justice League - The Whedon Cut

Batman Returns

Meh:

The Amazing Spider-Man

Superman Returns

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer

Fantastic Four (2005)

Batman Forever

Superman III

Really not that bad, but disappointed well below my expectations:

The Dark Knight Rises

Spider-Man 3

Bad:

Wonder Woman 84

Green Lantern

Superman IV: The Quest for Peace

Hulk (2003)

Batman v. Superman

X-Men 3: The Last Stand

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

The New Mutants

X-Men: Dark Phoenix

Blade Trinity

Hot Garbage:

Fantastic Four (2015)

X-Men: Apocalypse

Batman & Robin

The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Have not seen:

Daredevil

Catwoman

Constantine

Elektra

Jonah Hex

Joker

Cannot remember a damn thing or have any feelings attached towards:

Blade II

Batman '68

Punisher movies

Ghost Rider movies

...and whatever else I missed.

After this... the list gets too hard.  And if we're counting animated movies it becomes impossible to discern what's better than what.  DC has put out a bunch of solid animated stories.

Spider-Verse took me by surprise in so many ways.

Both of you should check out Teen Titans GO! vs. Teen Titans.  Totally a Spider-verse rip-off that is really well done.

It's certainly better than the first Thor movie.

The first Thor is one of those movies that isn't great, but I still love it anyway.  I think it has a good emotional center.  The Dark World is one of the movies that is objectively structured better, but I simply did not enjoy.  I really can not get past how bad of a villain Malekith is.  Everything about the Dark Elves makes no fucking sense.

Which is a shame because Malekith is a GREAT villain in the comic and he has at LEAST two great storylines tha I know of. A lot of his story was changed by Making the Asgardians cosmic beings/aliens instead of mythical beings/gods. His awesome though in the comics.

Oh the other big grievance, which is worse than a dull villain, is Jane and the Ether.  That plot point makes no sense, and ruins her character.  Jane does nothing after coming in contact, absorbing, and surviving an Infinity Stone.  She becomes a victim and needs to be saved.  But she should have been the first "Captain Marvel", powerful and having her own agency.  It's disappointing that neither her, or even the Asgardians, try to use the stone to defeat their enemies.
