FWIW I love Song of the South. I know, looking back as an adult, all of its now obvious problems (I mean, it has a literal tar baby for fuck's sake) . But I remember watching it as a kid and at the time I didn't pick up on any of that. It just didn't register in that way, you know? It was just a happy movie with cartoon birds and wacky 'ol Br'ers Rabbit, Fox and Bear getting into hijinx. It was one of my favorites growing up. And I maintain that "Zip-i-dee-doo-dah" is one of the best Disney songs of all time. I knew there was zero chance of it being rereleased on Disney+, but I'm still just a tad bummed they didn't do it. Warnings, a long overdue mea culpa, maybe a forward from a film historian, and a chance for education is better than pretending it never happened IMO.

Half the teams in the League are traveling so the head coaches won't be available, the workout is in Atlanta but the Falcons are traveling so they won't even be there, and for the half that aren't traveling, those coaches aren't gonna fly across the country to watch a workout and fly back the day before a game when they have game prep to do. This is why workouts like this are usually held mid-week. He's going to see a handful of assistants and scouting dudes, at best. This reeks of the League just doing something so they can say they did.

Forbidden Desert compares pretty favorably to Island. It adds a couple minor mechanics, but largely is the same level of challenge. Just as fun IMO. Sky though is a pretty steep step up. It seems far more challenging and there are extra things you have to manage other than just, as in the Island/Desert models, keeping the Island afloat. I like challenging so Sky is good times. Full disclosure; we've yet to win a game of Sky. If you like Island, but you've played it out and want to change up the mechanics a bit, grab Desert. If you like Island but want a more difficult experience, grab Sky.

My game group is still into heavy D&D mode, so other games have suffered a bit. And with a campaign session on the schedule for this weekend and next, it doesn't look good for the near future. HOWEVER! I got in some quality play time with Forbidden Island this weekend. I'd played Forbidden Desert and Forbidden Sky before, but this was my first crack at the one that started it all.

I'm speculating, but purple was probably chosen to be just below gold because purple is one of the traditional colors of royalty so culturally we attribute a higher perceived value to those items, just as we immediately know without being told that a gray or white item is dull or "common". The longer answer to the question of why we keep seeing it is because over time such color coding has become part of the "language" of game design that most of us understand. Using the same design language as spoken across many games allows developers to communicate information effectively with a minimum of actual explanation. As gamers we understand things instinctually based on, whether we think about it or not, our knowledge of this language. It's the same reason we intuitively just know without explicitly being told that red indicates damage/health or that long-pressing the jump button will make us jump higher/further. We can pick up a game that we've never played before and, while we may not be masters, we will be basically competent at it based on use of this language within the game and our ingrained understanding of it.
