I can't update Windows

Recommended Posts

So, my PC hasn't had an update in years. Last year some time I realized that and went to check for updates. There were updates available but when I tried to download or install them I was met with an error. I forgot about that pretty much instantly. Now today, I tried to play the Dragon's Dogma 2 character creator and I believe there is some issue arising from the fact that my PC hasn't been updated in years. I was told by two different people that my outdated WDDM or whatever was the issue, and that I need to up date my pc or install windows 11.

I tried fixing the issue to no avail. I did everything this video asked of me as this is the error I am facing.

When I tried using the W10 update assistant everything seemed to be working until the time to apply the updates. When I got to the "installing updates do not turn off the pc" part my pc restarted before reaching 1% and when it rebooted I got a message saying "undoing changes made to you pc". When that didn't work I tried the media creation tool only for the exact same shit to happen. If it wasn't clear, I tried every step on the video, but none of it worked.

Really at a loss on what to do here. I did get a different error when I used the creation tool, haven't looked too much into it but the solutions to that were nearly the same. Don't remember the error code. Saved it on my pc but I'm on my phone right now.

So, if you got any ideas let me know. I won't be checking this thread until later tonight tho which is when I'll post some pics of the errors. And if this thread is hard to read it's cuz I typed it on my phone lol.

I'm sure you probably googled the error numbers yourself but one of the fixes for your second error is to manually set the date and time of your computer and sync with internet time in the additional clock setting.

I'll see if it works, but I doubt it. The time and shit was already accurate so yeah.

@Bacon have you run the Windows Update Troubleshooter?

Hit the Windows key and just type "troubleshoot" and then select the first option (likely with "System settings" underneath).

In the troubleshooter, on the left select "Windows Update" and then you'll see a button that says "Run the troubleshooter".

Yeah, that was the first thing I did. I'll do it again, but it just shows that there is an error but with no fix.

This was supposed to be off and under additional clocks a different setting was supposed to sync

I turned it off, but then I turned it back on. And I can't find any "additional clock settings"

this is frustrating

the only thing I seem to have not tried is fully wiping my PC

I really don't want to lose all of my data

Copy your documents folder to another drive, and reinstall.

If you're not backing your photos/etc up already -- figure out how you want to do that going forward.

It could be a lost cause. A couple of years ago my Windows (notably explorer.exe) was acting funny and had poor performance while gaming. I tried every single fix and optimization I could find, including half of those commands. Nothing worked, so I caved and did a fresh install of the OS.  My problems were finally solved after that.

You could try a reset that keeps your files, which basically copies over your documents folder and resets everything else.

But it's probably best to wipe everything. Get an external drive and copy over any files. If there are program settings you'd like to transfer, then copy over your entire C:\Users folders and make sure it includes your AppData folder (which is hidden by default at C:\Users\username\AppData) since that contains most of the settings for your applications.

No, yeah, it's fucked for sure. Had my brother help out who knew of a few different things to look for in system logs and even tried to install an older but new-than-mine update and that didn't work. He had no suggestions other than what I had already done.

I won't be messing with it until I can get another external hard drive. I have audio porn folder that is 1.3 TB on my D drive. Tho, maybe I could just unplug it from the mobo? I'm, not even sure if a reset will affect the D drive.

My installation of Windows has a similar problem. It can do smaller updates but any time it tries to update to version 21H2 it gets a 0x800700c1 error. Same with updating .NET framework.

I tried every suggestion online but I'm just gonna have to do a reinstall at some point. I've just been too lazy.

I think I had an issue with the upgrade from 7 to 10 because of my sound card at the time. Unplugging all non-essential hardware and making sure everything left has up-to-date signed drivers might let the update finish. If you do a fresh install, it will only wipe the drive you select but you can also disconnect other drives if you want to be extra safe. Office 365 comes with 1 TB of cloud storage and you can sync folders like Desktop and Documents. You could get a trial and cancel after making sure everything is restored.

I unplugged every USB device in one of my attempts and it didn't change anything. I didn't unplug the ethernet cable or monitors.

I wouldn't worry about the ethernet or monitor cable, but if you haven't already, make sure you have the latest bios and drivers for all the stuff on your motherboard. You can also disable stuff in the bios that you aren't using so if you're not using onboard sound or video, disable them. Sometimes you'll have some SATA and/or USB ports controlled by a separate chip on the motherboard that need their own drivers or you can disable them if the main ones are enough.

Does it say anything in the detailed information at the bottom?
