Government advisers say the leading decongestant used by millions of Americans to treat nasal congestion doesn't actually work.

Advisers to the Food and Drug Administration voted unanimously on Tuesday against the effectiveness of the key drug found in popular versions of Sudafed, Dayquil and other medications stocked on store shelves.

If the FDA follows through on the panel’s recommendations, Johnson & Johnson, Bayer and other drugmakers could be required to pull their oral medications containing phenylephrine from store shelves. That would likely force consumers to switch to the behind-the-counter pseudoephedrine products or to phenylephrine-based nasal sprays and drops.

I think regular Sudafed still works, it's the OTC version (Sudafed PE) that doesn't?

They're both OTC (one you need to sign for and are "limited" in how much you can purchase at a time), but yes, they are two very different drugs that are both sold under the Sudafed name as well as other brands.

To be fair I’m recalling shit from my fire dept days, I was a haz mat tech and we were trained to make meth so we’d know to recognize it, as nearly half our calls were damn meth labs.

Shit may have changed

Yea, pseudoephedrine is what’s used to make meth, phenylephrine (what this article is about) is not. Both of those drugs are sold under the Sudafed brand name.
