Alef Aeronautics said the FAA Special Airworthiness Certificate meant test flights for the Model A could now begin. It's already taking pre-orders.

The fully electric vehicle (with a hydrogen option for a higher price) is a low-speed vehicle that can be driven up to 200 miles on public roads and fits into a regular garage, but it can also launch vertically into the air with a flying range of 110 miles, according to Alef's website.

Joby Aviation said this week that it got the green light to flight test its factory-made air taxi, which it hopes to launch commercially in 2025. It's...

I would never drive a flying car. It's not even going to be a reality even with this concept. It's to dangerous.

This car probably has the best chance. Supposedly maybe who knows could possibly go on sale next year. That's better than the usual "near future" you normally get from these folks.

That's very cool but can you imagine a skyline full of these. Flying and driving etc. It could kill so many people with one wrong move. 😆

Don't get me wrong, I'd get one in a second if it were an option. 😆

The runways would cost a bucket full of money to provide across the country.

We won't be seeing mainstream flying cars for another 50+ years.

Unless they're fully self-flying I doubt we'd ever see mainstream flying cars. It's just too expensive to train someone how to fly for that to be the norm for everyone.

This car, though, is absolutely a toy. That said, it must be nice being able to drive the car home and store in a garage over leasing hangar space.

Oh, I absolutely agree. Traffic would be nonexistent and you could get home in a heart beat.

Flying cars sound cool until you think about them for longer than 10 seconds. Literally the one in the OP could be used to fly from one private airport to another in the same area, and that's it. The other "air taxi" posted in this thread is just a helicopter. We've had those for almost 70 years.

Both options have significant restrictions on where, when, and how low you can fly them, in addition to where you can land them.

You know why, in every movie with flying cars, all of the cars seem to form roads in the air? Because that's the only way they could work. You would have to fly in designated areas that aren't over cities or parklands should you crash. And do you know what we already have that suits that purpose? fucking roads.

Not to mention, could you imagine the noise if flying cars were a thing? Regular cars are bad enough (cities aren't loud, cars are loud), now you want to give them propellers and/or jet engines?

Flying cars are becoming closer to reality than what sci-fi movies may lead you to believe. Another electric flying car...

Meanwhile, on the other US coast, Doroni Aerospace is pioneering its own path. This past week, the company’s CEO became one of the first to successfully test pilot a 2-seater eVTOL in the US.

Merdinger explained the test run “felt like floating on a cushion of air, experiencing a level of freedom and excitement that is unparalleled.” Adding, “This is just the beginning for us.”

The eVTOL has ten electric motors altogether. Each of the four ducts contains two e-motors with patented ducted propellers for a total of eight designed for vertical flight and an additional “two pushers for efficient flight.”

The system is simple to use, with semi-autonomous capabilities to guide you to different levels. There is one control stick you push forward, backward, or to the side.

According to Doroni’s website, the 23-foot long, 15-foot wide, and 5.5-foot tall eVTOL weighs 1,650 lbs. It also has a top speed of 140 mph (100 mph cruising speed), a 60-mile range, and fast charging from 20% to 80% in under 20 mins.

Merdinger says the company already has over 300 requests for preorders and is aiming to begin deliveries by 2025.

Another flying car has been certified to begin flight testing. California-based ASKA has received special airworthiness certification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to conduct test flights of its four-seater passenger vehicle.
