Bibi Fucked Up: A thread for the ongoing Judicial Crisis and mass protests in Israel

Recommended Posts

I haven't been following the issues in Israel closely, but Bibi Netanyahu has apparently fucked up due to the introduction of some judicial legislation that a shitload of people dislike. The defense minister called Netanyahu out on it yesterday and was promptly fired. That's what has now spurred on mass demonstrations against Netanyahu and his government.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu fired Defense Minister Yoav Gallant after he dramatically broke ranks and called for a pause in the government's controversial drive to overhaul Israel's court system.

Protests are growing and police have lost control outside of Netanyahu's residence.

What amounts to a general strike has taken shape, with the Israeli general consul in NY resigning and a group of doctors claiming they won't be going to work tomorrow:

Here's a summary of the judicial reforms that Netanyahu introduced:

Fresh protests are expected in Israel against far-reaching changes to the country's legal system some say threaten Israel's democratic foundations.

The judicial overhaul is a package of bills, all of which need to pass three votes in the Knesset before they become law.

One of the most important elements for the Netanyahu government is the bill that changes the makeup of the nine-member committee that selects judges, in order to give the government a majority of the seats on the committee.

Netanyahu and his supporters argue that the Supreme Court has become an insular, elitist group that does not represent the Israeli people. They argue the Supreme Court has overstepped its role, getting into issues it should not rule on.

Quote

Another significant element of the changes is known as the override clause, which would give the Israeli parliament the power to pass laws previously ruled invalid by the court, essentially overriding Supreme Court decisions.

Supporters say the Supreme Court should not interfere in the will of the people, who vote the politicians into power.

Quote

Another bill, now voted through, makes it more difficult for a sitting Prime Minister to be declared unfit for office, restricting the reasons to physical or mental incapacity and requiring either the prime minister themselves, or two-thirds of the cabinet, to vote for such a declaration.

This is just a portion. But honestly, it sounds like these changes make the Israeli justice system more like that of the US. And it's clear that Israelis fucking HATE it.

How many times has Bibi been in and out of power at this point?

it really is something else. Feels like every time his goose is cooked, he’s back in the top spot within a year or so.

Bibi will have to resign.

That'll make, what, five elections in two years? Or will it be like what happened with Boris Johnson where they just replace him with someone else from his party's leadership?

Israeli Parliament is a cluster fuck of different parties, unless someone can assemble a 61 seat coalition, elections again.

Prior to entering office Ben-Gvir was known to have a portrait in his living room of Israeli-American terrorist Baruch Goldstein, who massacred 29 Palestinian Muslim worshipers and wounded 125 others in Hebron, in the 1994 Cave of the Patriarchs massacre;[3][30] he removed the portrait in preparation for the 2020 Israeli legislative election in hope of being allowed to run on the unified right list headed by Naftali Bennett.[31]

Military targets tunnels, weapons sites in Strip after rockets hit northern, southern Israel; Lebanese PM condemns use of country's soil for 'escalation' after 34 projectiles fired

Looks like Bibi trying to bait a Third Intifada may have drawn in Hezbollah, this'll end well.

According to that news article, the strikes were directed at Hamas targets in Lebanon, not Hezbollah.
