Death Stranding

So I downloaded this for free from the new PS+ service, its a game I have been interested in for awhile. So far the overall idea of the story is interesting but dear fucking lord in the first 3 hours I have maybe 10 mins of actual gameplay. On top of that the names of characters and outfits they wear and the dialog feel so damn corny. Does this game ever get going and does it ever get better or I am wasting my time?

Im going to try to get in to it for my fifth time soon then I’ll give up if it doesn’t click. I really feel if I could just get past the first few chapters I’d like this game but fuck it feels so damn slow.

I’m hoping having it on a handheld will work better, and then when things pick up I could play it on tv some.

Death Stranding never looked good to me, I still don’t even really know what it is. An open world delivery sim? I never planned on playing it, but my brother got me it for PS4 so now I feel obligated to play it at some point. :p Maybe I’ll end up liking it, who knows?

I played it with podcasts the entire time and it was brilliant. It made it feel more authentic for how I’d experience the situation (which I know sounds very silly). I also played it during the first, UK Lockdown and it resonated strongly due to that.

I have heard the gameplay is very Zen but if I continue to get 40 mins of cut scenes followed by 10 mins of gameplay then I am out.

Don't worry it will soon be 50 mins of cut scenes followed by 5 mins of gameplay lol

The opening is frontloaded with cutscenes. Once your reach Chapter 3 especially, I think I spent like 20 hours without any major interruptions. Just building roads, helping people, discovering preppers.

I dunno, it has cutscenes yea but at the pace I played at least, the ratio was really low vs. pure gameplay after the opening hours.

One of my Top 5 games of the gen. I think it's fantastic but it just hapoened to click with me. I also find the silly naivety of the characters etc. highly endearing honestly.

drive trucks as in my profession ? nope.

Yeah I think that's my mistake, a problem with my brain based off you saying you were keeping a gun in your truck so for some reason I thought, "Truck = Truck driver" and think of that first even though you've said you install security systems or something. :p

Any guess how many hours it takes to Chapter 3?

Well it's really the crazy long opening. Chapter 2 is sorta the tutorial area where you're introduced to all the game's basic systems and then Ch 3 really opens up with a steady stream of new gadgets and stuff like that.

Even as a huge fan, the opening IS entirely too loaded with cutscenes.

Good god lol

lol yeah I mean I don’t do that for everything that doesn’t click, it just seems that on paper I should like this game and I’m a huge MGS 1-4 fan, but this isn’t clicking with me. I only restarted it once, switching to pc, the other attempts were just resuming the same save, and that’s what I’ll be doing on deck.

It seems like a lot but I’ve only spent a few hours on it, like Im in chapter 2. I hear things get more interesting and with better traversal after chapter 4, but I can’t get myself to play that much lol, which I guess should mean to definitely not bother with it anymore but yolo.

It is a cool and weird game that I'm glad I played, and I'll probably go through the Director's Cut at some point in the future. The story is nonsense, but making a fat delivery is weirdly satisfying.

That and seeing Conan.

Describing the game didn’t do it justice. It was somehow the most strangely satisfying thing to create roads, create supplies, connect the world and deliver stuff.

The amount I enjoy this game vs. how shit it sounds on paper is insane. It's an incredibly satisfying gameplay loop and I'm still not sure I can tell anyone 100% what I love about it. I've 5-star'd pretty much every shelter in the game because apparently I love being a post-apocalyptic FedEx guy.

It does kind of sound like shit on paper, but I’m still willing to give it a chance since I own it. There have been games in the past that I didn’t think that I would like, but I ended up liking them when I played them. This could be one of those games.
