Figure from head of commission investigating sexual abuse comes days before publication of report

The head of an independent commission investigating child sexual abuse in the French Catholic church has said about 3,000 paedophiles have operated inside the institution since 1950.

Days before publication of its report, Jean-Marc Sauvé said the commission’s investigations had uncovered between 2,900 and 3,200 paedophile priests or other church members, adding that this was “a minimum estimate”.

Sauvé told Agence-France Presse that the 2,500-page report, based on church, court and police archives as well as interviews with witnesses and due to be published on Tuesday, had tried to quantify both the number of offenders and of victims.

The Church asks for forgiveness as an inquiry says it treated victims with "cruel indifference".

Some 216,000 children - mostly boys - have been sexually abused by clergy in the French Catholic Church since 1950, a damning new inquiry has found.

The head of the inquiry said there were at least 2,900-3,200 abusers, and accused the Church of showing a "cruel indifference towards the victims".

Pope Francis "felt pain" on hearing about the inquiry's finding, a Vatican statement said.

The inquiry found the number of children abused in France could rise to 330,000, when taking into account abuses committed by lay members of the Church, such as teachers at Catholic schools

Shut the whole thing down.

Problem is nobody has power over the Vatican and it's banks. Italy certainly won't ever confront the church, Vatican City is a sovereign nation, and over a billion people worldwide support the catholic church. Its an incredibly rich and powerful entity, shutting it down isnt a possibility.

The only thing that can be done is to sue individual diocese, and the church has proven themselves experts on moving wealth to protect it. At this point, its nice to see them exposed, but nothing will change.

Okay then, just get mobs to burn the churches down.

Remove celibacy requirements and/or allow clergy to marry and this problem would practically disappear going forward.

It isn’t as though sexual abuse doesn’t exist amongst married people. The issue isn’t celibacy, it is the power predators have within institutions.

There is no celibacy requirement in public education, but thousands of children are sexually abused every year by public school teachers.

Sexual predators look for opportunities to victimize people, and that includes the employment they go for.

Fair enough. Speaking from my own religious background I can say that this issue does exist there too. And being married is a requirement for clergy there. Maybe 'drastically' isn't the word I should have used but being in an environment/profession where sexual expression is forbidden also creates monsters that otherwise might not exist.

I had an escaped Mormon as a co-worker and would always tease her about the polygamy and she'd always say, "They don't do that anymore!"
