As someone who works at a place that routinely does genomic cancer screening, I can confirm this happens everywhere and is done by everyone, including geneticists, molecular biologists, etc. :p I'd also add that people's understanding of biological sex is typically incomplete too, but I don't think that's especially surprising either.
