  1. I don't think BR games work well as esports for several reasons. 1. Randomness and luck play too large a role. 1a. BR games generally break down when all parties are "playing to win." When the objective is to be the last person standing defensive play will always be the most logical thing and it will make the games unfun for the competitors and uninteresting for observers. This is well-illustrated by all the water camping in early PUGB tournaments. 2. Spectators will only ever get to see a tiny slice of any given match and in order to keep the viewing experience interesting production teams will have to frequently shift perspectives making it hard for viewers to ever get invested in any one player's perspective and success. 3. The logistics of running a tournament with that many people playing simultaneously would be awful. Returning to the "play to win" argument, in order for tournaments to prevent camping/defensive/boring play they will have to implement rules that incentivize killing. This will likely lead to a system where the players who win the match(es) do not necessarily win the event, which will be anticlimactic for everyone since in a lot of situations to results of the event will be determined well before the final kill of the final round. A system like this would feel bad for spectators and competitors alike. These obstacles aren't entirely insurmountable, and I hope these games can succeed as esports but I don't envy anyone whose job it is to figure all this out.
  2. Fortnite BR was very bare bones at the start and took a lot of development before it became the giant that it is now. I started playing midway through Season 2 and the game had just started to attract mainstream attention around that time.
  3. I'm pretty surprised at this game's initial success given how similar it seems to the COD BR, but I guess being free is a huge draw.
  4. I wouldn't hold my breath, it took about 30 years for something to come out that isn't a deathmatch variant. For better or worse, BR is the biggest development in multiplayer shooters in the last 20 years.
  5. Yeah, early impressions are only so valuable in a game like this. Unless the launch is smooth and the gameplay and progression are highly praised I think I'll wait a month or two to see what the final verdict is. I just remember that the initial impressions towards Destiny 2 were very positive but a month out everyone had turned on the game. Fortunately for me, I think my expectations for the game are pretty reasonable, meaning I recognize that the story is going to be a garbage cliche retread and I'm fine with that.
  6. I'm just going to wait for it all to be out. It's too hard to stay engaged with breaks lasting several months. I think I'll enjoy the finished product the most if I can play it all at the same time.
  7. The problem is that in these "ongoing" games nothing of consequence can really happen to the world. I have never felt truly engaged by the storytelling in any similar game and I think it would take major structural evolution for one of these games to even approach the lackluster story standards of a singleplayer AAA game.
  8. I highly doubt there will be any compelling story just based on the premise of the game. There just isn't much to say about a forbidding primordial world in which your job is to shoot everything that moves.
  9. This game looks so good I'm going back to RE7. I made it through another whole half hour! One hour total of quaking in my booties.
  10. More and more it looks like Anthem is taking its cues from Warframe, and I find that very encouraging.
  11. I guess it's all fair play since Gearbox seems to have fired the first shot going after Callender's desire to have six-pack abs.
  12. “It’s a woman who is masturbating,” Pitchford said, “and when she has some experience that appears as if she’s having an orgasm, a huge amount of fluid comes out of her vagina.” “This is not a sex worker—this is a fucking magician,” he added, saying he had purchased one of her videos and put it on the USB stick. “Some kid, an employee of the Medieval Times, discovered this memory stick, took it home, and accessed it because it was before we were password-protecting, and discovered secrets of my company and future games in development, and also discovered the pornography. And it was barely legal porn. This girl’s handle was ‘Only 18.’”
  13. There is something super funny about the voice just rephrasing tired platitudes really epically for like ten minutes. For your pleasure, I have transcribed this wonderful poem. My father used to tell me stories when I was a child about the giants of old who gazed at the earth, disappointed in the wars of men. Agony had filled their hearts bringing with it fire and ash. Smoke blocked out the sun robbing all of its warmth. Destruction laid waste to lands once filled with laughter. In the end, the giants stepped in to put a stop to the death. Their judgment was swift and absolute. I wish we had someone to do the same to us. But when faced with evil the good must prevail. Fighting for those next to us to protect those behind us and forging our bonds in the fires of hell and as the bodies grow in number so will our perseverance. This is who we are. Those that fight in the dark in the mud in the deep to save those in the light to face the titans the demons the perilous to stretch across distant lands for it is our duty our honor and our sworn mission to defend the ideals we believe in because once we drop our swords things will forever be changed.
  14. Listening to Brad talk about RDR2 in the final discussion has made me really want to play the game in a way that no other video or discussion has. Also, the best-looking category was victimized by the best style category where they pushed DBZ and octopath out by saying they would fit better in best-looking.
  15. I was really hoping that old man Jeff would show up to let everyone know that the actual best game of 2018, , needed to be on the top 10 list.
  16. "Game of the year is a battle of will, it is not an electoral process" -Brad Shoemaker 2018 I'm glad that things are finally getting spicy around Most Disappointing.
  17. GB GOTY exists to show what an arbitrary shitshow GOTY awards are and it is a self-fulfilling process that they be a hot mess. It's the time of year when all my favorite gaming journalists gather around the Festivus pole for the airing of grievances and to talk about how much they inexplicably like Destiny 2. I haven't finished day five, but so far I am disappointed by Jeff's acquiescence to Brad's iron-fisted rule, and that Abby has fallen into the Navarro school of highlighting her games but not actually rallying for them to be on the final list. I am particularly disappointed that a game with literally no story managed to place third in best story.
