I wonder if Jiu Jitsu is going to be the next 'Karate' where movies just interchangeably use a well-known martial art as a euphemism for....fighting that's not strictly boxing?

Pretty much... I've seen it used improperly for years ever since MMA became mainstream. Jiu Jitsu joins Karate and Kung Fu as a catch all phrase for any type of fighting that is Asian and may involve kicking.

I was actually gonna type 'fighting with Asians'. It could be an Asian dude straight-up boxing and it'd be Kung Fu according to the film industry.

But Brazilian jiu jitsu is neither Asian nor does it have much kicking, and it IS what became popular, not Japanese Jiu Jitsu, which I would say most don’t know exists.

One, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu's roots are Japanese and it IS Asian in origin, look it up. The Gracie patriarch Helio Gracie learned Jiu Jitsu from Japanese Judoka and it evolved from there. It was effective because they were using it in actual streetfights and they incorprated other disciplines like wrestling and Judo. There is a LOT of historical travel and cultural exchange between Japan and Brazil. Also Brazilain Jiu Jitsu practioners Do employ low kicks to knowck their opponent off balence and to set them up for holds and throwss

Two, I would argue that most people over the age of 30 DO know that Japanese Jiu Jitsu exists... I mean the name itself is JAPANESE. People were familiar with martial arts before UFC came along and Jiu Jitsu was known before Brazilian Jiu Jitsu exploded on the scene.

Three, The fact that this movie is called "Jiu Jitsu" and doesn't seem to have ANY Jiu Jitsu proves the initial point that like Karate and Kung Fu, Jiu Jitsu seems to be the latest Martial art that has become a generic catch all for martial arts in general.

Did you think that Brazilians just came up with this on their own and decided to call it "Jiu Jitsu" with no relationship to the original Japanes martial art?

I do know the history very well, but they are extremely different martial arts. JJJ has very little grappling, and is a very rounded martial art. Id say 15% is grappling. 95% of BJJ is grappling directly on the ground. There is very little jjj in bjj. It’s a foundation, barely. Helio and Carlos taught almost no striking, because they were tiny.

and most people who come into the bjj clubs know nothing of the Japanese art. I’ve been training for four years, and I don’t know we’ve ever practiced kicks beyond defending against them.

So you've never been taught the Pisao after 4 years of BJJ training? Hmmm...

The "no strikes" in BJJ is a common misconception amongst a lot of people and I know SOME systems that teach "Sport BJJ" may not emphasize strikes or even teach them. The Gracie system from what I know of it, DOES teach strikes and kicks and the pisao was a common technique they would use to throw opponents of balance and to get into take down range.

This is all besides the point that the movie in the title is called Jiu Jitsu and seems to have damn near no Jiu Jitsu in it based on that trailer Brazilian or otherwise... indicating that Jiu Jitsu is the new "Karate".

The argument doesn't even apply to this movie to begin with. There is literally zero Jiu Jitsu of any kind in it and like we said, it's amusing to see Jiu Jitsu apparently being a catch-all euphemism for martial arts like 'karate' or 'kung fu' used to be.

I've dabbled in BJJ here and there just because I've trained at Matt Serra's academy for ten years pre-Covid but my focus has always been stand-up, Muay Thai (Dutch) and Boxing. Not that I'm some self-proclaimed expert but martial arts movies tend to irritate me with all the quick-cut editing and shit, always looks cheesy to me.

Again, as I said sbove, we do striking, but its to learn to defend against them and do takedowns. For every punch and kick we throw there is a v hundred omapaplatas and a thousand rnc’s. I don’t know if you train in BJJ, but yes, four years, a purple belt, 3 different mma gyms, and we’ve Rarely done any kind of striking that wasn’t directly related to locking up of defending in Jiu Jitsu class.

And I know guys like Rickson like to sayits s complete martial art, but its not. Thats why almost everyone does kickboxing with it.

You’re definitely correct though, there was no jiu jitsu in that movie. There was some Tae Kwon Do. That was my first martial art when I got out of high school. Fuck, I can’t wsit until I can train again, regularly. This covid shit is insanity. I have one friend I train with twice a week, butits not the same.

The way I've kept myself sane is by going to my local High School's track nearby and hitting this long heavy bag they have out there for, I assume, football practice? Only downside is that it's right by a main road and people constantly yell shit at me while driving by because, quite frankly, I probably look like a douche. Then again, it's either that or nothing sooooo...

When I go for a run theres a house on my route where I regularly see a kid practicing nun chucks on a tree in his back yard. At first I thought he was kind of a sad “light saber” type kid. But the more I watched he’s actually pretty good at it. It’s fun to watch.

That story relates to nothing in this thread haha. Just your post made me think of it.

One of the reasons I won't put a bag out in my parent's backyard... afraid my neighbors will think I'm some MMA douche. Plus me and the guy next door have exchanged words a couple of times... we have a friendly but somewhat tense back and forth about boxing. When my stepfather found out the guy was a boxing fan, he introduced me to the dude and needless to say we don't share the same opinions on fights and fighters :p

I've never done any official  BJJ training outside of sparring with a couple of buddies of mine who teach it. I grew up with a boxing/karate background (most recently dabbling in Silat before the pandemic hit) and my grappling game is VERY weak :p I think your background and what I'm talking about are two differnt things. My understanding is that most MMA gyms teach a more sport oriented version of BJJ that has little to no strikes but that "classical" BJJ (particularly Gracie Jiu Jitsu) DOES incorporate strikes including the Pisao that I showed above. Gracie Jiu Jitsu was honed in the streets of Brazil (and in them going to different dojos and beating other styles). Again, I've never trained in BJJ but like I said a couple of buddies I know teach it (one teaching it to law enforcement) and that's who I get my info from.

Most of what I look to learn personally is defense against getting taken down and being able to escape different holds and stuff.  Last place I want to be in a streetfight is rolling around on the ground :p

Eh fuck that guy. Put a bag in the backyard and go to town. You'll forget anyone may be watching within two minutes of feeling great punching the shit out of a bag!

So what you're saying is you're too big of a pussy to rear naked choke two bloodthirsty pit bulls to death in a random mid-training attack...

Disappointing.

PS: The guillotine is for the dog owner, I fucking hate irresponsible dog owners.

The place I want to be in a fight is on the ground. I can end them quickly without physically hitting anyone. Where if Im going to throw punches or kickbox, someone could end up dead.

What if you're fighting more than one guy? Or fighting in an alley where there is broken glass or shit like that around? Most fights end up on the ground so it pays to know how to handle your self in that situation, but I would never want to take a street fight to the ground if I could help it. Nobody is tapping out in a street fight so unless you're gonna put someone to sleep, you're gonna be down there for awhile and it limits your options if you have to you know, run.
