Barbie and Oppenheimer combined cost less than Thor: Love and Thunder

Recommended Posts

The headlines all seem to be that Barbie and Oppenheimer are breaking expectations and such and while they both may end up with a bigger world wide box office than Thor 4, let’s face it, Barbie is doing a ton of the heavy lifting. I could see Barbie by itself so more than Thor Love and Thunder in theaters.

An $80 million opening for a talky, three hour, R-rated biopic about a scientist is absolutely insane. And when you look at other weekends when a movie opens as big as Barbie, basically any other movie opening the same week does way less than Oppie. Yes, Barbie is obviously doing much better overall, but the two movies together is definitely a noteworthy story. It’s a pretty unique phenomenon.

The bigger news is that Barbie made more in its opening weekend than The Flash did in it's entire theatrical run. The Flash also had a 200 million dollar budget but unlike Thor, it didn't make that back at all. This seems more relevant to me than comparing two movies that didn't even come out in the same year

Bigger news than that is if Thor Love and Thunder and Barbie came out on the same weekend Barbie would have made more money and still cost less to make! :o

It can’t be overstated how impressive $82.5 million is for an R-Rated film, never mind one that’s three hours.

The only r rated movie to open higher that wasn’t an established IP or sequel is Passion of the Christ.

And it’s because of Oppenheimer that this weekend is the fourth highest grossing of all time. You’re usually not going to get that far unless the top movie is Star Wars/big MCU level (Avengers). You need an extremely strong second place to go with it.
