unogueen
For profit prison and healthcare? The return of child labour? Legacy inductees to higher learning? Constitutional right to bear arms? A long ass history of eugenic horrors? It's clearly libertarian.

I suppose it depends on your definition. It is a "liberal democracy," so by a literal definition you could say it is. And it is also ideologically liberal compared to, say... Saudi Arabia. Greatoneshere
It's a liberal nation because that designation is comparative to other nations, not about meeting some theoretical or ideological ideal. The United States usually ranks in the top 20 or top 30 amongst all nations on worldwide rankings/metrics like the Economic Freedom Index or the Human Freedom Index that comes out each year (remember, the United Nations officially recognizes 193 countries plus two "observer states"). So being in the top 20 or top 30 when you have over 350 million people living in your country, over an enormous landmass, while leading the "free world" and shepherding NATO and earning 22% of the world's GDP is pretty impressive I think. I've listed other nations of "import" with large land masses and large populations below (to create a somewhat closer like-for-like comparison) so you can see that compared to most other countries, America is actually doing pretty well, and that's why it's considered a liberal nation. The Democracy Index of 2021 listed America at 26th (you'll see it listed amongst the different indexes below). The democracy index lists the United States as a "flawed democracy" amongst its tiered point system (this is the next best tier after a "full democracy", which was the designation American used to have, Trump lowered our score over the recent years). The 26th most democratic nation on Earth is pretty liberal overall I'd say. The only index where America is doing really poorly is the global peace index because of our domestic gun violence and gang violence which puts us at 122 (out of the 163 countries that were researched/had data for that index). A lot of conclusions can be drawn when you collate all these indexes. I mean we rank 17th in human freedoms (out of 165 countries that were ranked) so yeah, that's pretty liberal by any measure. -Economic Freedom Index 2022: https://www.heritage.org/index/ranking -United States (25th) -Pakistan (153rd) -China (158th) -India (131st) -Russia (113th) -Saudi Arabia (118th) -Turkey (107th) -Human Freedom Index 2022: https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/freedom-index-by-country -United States (17th) -Pakistan (146th) -China (151st) -India (119th) -Russia (126th) -Saudi Arabia (155th) -Turkey (140th) -GDP Index 2022: https://worldpopulationreview.com/countries/countries-by-gdp -United States (1st – 22%) -Pakistan (207th) -China (2nd – 15%) -India (5th – 3%) -Russia (12th – 1.5%) -Saudi Arabia (19th – 0.8%) -Turkey (18th – 0.9%) -Global Peace Index 2022: https://www.visionofhumanity.org/maps/#/ -United States (122nd) -Pakistan (150th) -China (100th) -India (135th) -Russia (154th) -Saudi Arabia (125th) -Turkey (149th) -Freest Countries Index 2022 (combination of Human and Freedom Indexes): https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/freest-countries -United States (17th) -Pakistan (145th) -China (151st) -India (119th) -Russia (126th) -Saudi Arabia (155th) -Turkey (140th) -Corruption Perceptions Index 2021: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corruption_Perceptions_Index -United States (27th) -Pakistan (140th) -China (66th) -India (85th) -Russia (136th) -Saudi Arabia (52nd) -Turkey (96th) -Democracy Index 2021: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democracy_Index -United States – flawed democracy – 7.85/10 (26th) -Pakistan – hybrid regime – 4.31/10 (104th) -China – authoritarian regime – 2.21/10 (148th) -India – flawed democracy – 6.91/10 (46th) -Russia – authoritarian regime – 3.24/10 (124th) -Saudi Arabia – authoritarian regime – 2.08/10 (152nd) -Turkey – hybrid regime – 4.35/10 (103rd) Freedom in the World Index 2021: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_in_the_World -United States – 83/100 (61st) -Pakistan – 37/100 (138th) -China – 9/100 (184th) -India – 67/100 (87th) -Russia – 20/100 (165th) -Saudi Arabia – 7/100 (187th) -Turkey – 32/100 (145th) United Nations Sustainable Development Report 2022: https://dashboards.sdgindex.org/rankings -United States – 41/193; 74.55/100 -Pakistan – 125/193; 59.34/100 -China – 56/193; 72.38/100 -India – 121/193; 60.32/100 -Russia – 45/193; 74.07/100 -Saudi Arabia – 96/193; 66.56/100 -Turkey – 71/193; 70.41/
