Upate: Pixar sources blame Disney+, studio leadership for Elemental's underperformance

Recommended Posts

Above anything I really enjoyed that it had a different visual dynamic than the rest of the Pixar library…

It used to be that Pixar was leading the way in visuals but it hasnt been that way for a long while now.. the visual variety and energy from the other animation studios make Pixar appear almost dull and predictable

Dreamworks and Illumination have been making better and/or more entertaining movies than Pixar for years.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is better than anything Pixar has done in 15 years.

DreamWorks has made 35+ movies in 28 years.

Deadline reports that the opening weekend for Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken has been nothing short of catastrophic. The movie opened at No. 6 at the domestic box office with $5.2 million, earning DreamWorks Animation the worst domestic opening weekend in the company's 28 years of existence. It's doing slightly better worldwide, with an overall gross of $12.8 million. However, that total only covers 18 percent of the movie's whopping $70 million budget.

Taking your family to the movies is so 2019.

Going out with the kids is always difficult and it's more expensive than ever. That pain is especially bad when it comes to an unknown where the kids might be checked out halfway in. Last movie my kids watched in theaters was Mario. I skipped Spider-Man since it's 2 hours+ and I'm not about to entertain that thought. There's no other movie in the horizon I'm taking the kids out to see. The best bet would be Trolls 3, but I have no desire to try to keep my 5yo from dancing on the seats.

I'll wait until it's home, streaming.

I mean they’re not wrong, but also this medium is evolving. Had the world not essentially shut down nearly 18 months it wouldn’t have expedited this, but the moment Disney decided to have a subscription based streaming platform of their own the writing was on the wall.

nothing short of maybe needing a Kinect style camera to count and keep track of the number of people in the room watching the movie and charge based on that ($6/person) would have done anything. And even that wouldn’t have worked because nobody would setup a camera in their living room to be able to rent Disney movies.

I guess they could have curbed expectations by holding every 2020/2021 release until theaters were full open and people willing to go out again. But now people are ok with waiting a few months as they’ve learned it’s cheaper with less hassle. And Disney is using new movies as a carrot to keep people from canceling their Disney+ subscriptions. So they couldn’t keep new movies off the service for 12+ months either.

It’s not just Disney either. The $300m+ movie budgets was untenable. It was a bubble of budgets and expectations just waiting to pop.

And any technical reasons that used to exist for watching movies in the theater, such as surround sound and big screens, are now more accessible at home than ever.

There can be good experiences at the theater, like having the audience there reacting to funny moments can genuinely make them seem funnier. And you still have IMAX and 3D if you want something special. But I think by and large people have soured on the theater going experience, since it only takes one or two annoying people to ruin a movie, and the nuisance of assigned seating which a lot of theaters seem to mandate.

You kinda nailed it on the head. Even when I worked at the theatre I watched a bunch in my earlier years and then I barely went even to staff screenings in my later years. Why? Didn’t want to go to work on my day off, annoying people/staff talked during screenings. Main reason was that I enjoyed them better at home on my 7.1 system and my Epson 8350/106” screen. That really started in 2010 and have only gotten better since then with 3 projector upgrades to 1080p 3D, 4K e-shift/3D, to true 4K/3D. Plus my system went to Atmos 5.2.4 and just last year I went 7.2.4 as my old receiver crapped out of me. Next upgrade I wanna do do is newer and slightly bigger projector screen with newer 8K image material for boost in clarity/colours. So why would I wanna go spend the same amount at the theatre for what I can later get on disc. Although the occasional movie does require an outing at the movies, before spoilers discussions/memes pop up everywhere.

That's impressive. I discovered when I became an audiophile that...actually theater speakers kind of suck! I don't have a nice speaker system (yet) but I do have highend headphones and the clarity isn't even comparable.

yeah we had plenty of subs and speakers that were blown that needed to be re-coned and glue back to health. Always felt bad for the cinematronics guy replacing the speakers behind our screen. We had light for them but they had to climb (what I thought) a rickety ladder. All while holding the speaker, or sometimes tide to a rope to which I held for them to lift upwards. To fix them , they had to walk on these pretty thin platforms the speakers sat on midway up behind the screen and replace/install. Seen them calibrate the speakers once, and looked like a white speaker ball on a tripod to their laptop in the booth.

Who doesn't like assigned seating? It's great being sure I won't get a bad seat because I had to use the bathroom or whatever.

Hey you know where you don't have to worry about your seat being stolen? Home.

Unless you have pets.

Uh I didn't mean your seat getting stolen in the middle of the show I meant not getting a good seat if you're running late getting into the theater.

That reminds me of a Caribbean woman and her family that took a kids spot away from him and his dad. It was The Dark Rises, playing in 4 of 12 theatres I believe and was the day after the shooting. So special notice out to all theatres for watching out on aggressive guests in the the cinemas. So this kid went to take a piss, left his jacket in seat, dad was getting popcorn and came back to this family sitting in their spot. Kid saw me in the hall and I was about to head in there anyways in to help with seating (no assigned seating then) So the kid told me what happen I went up to clear things up and she wasn’t having it. So management is called and things got heated, people near her said the kid/dad were there, some even saw her toss the kids jacket towards the walls rows below. So another manager comes in to help and the woman starts pulling out the race card, I chuckled thinking “really” and some guest who were watching turned to me to make sure they heard that right. So now cops have to be called and the nearest squad to respond was our towns SWAT team and truck. Semi-auto and full body gear personal eventually walked her and the family out, with an applause from the other seated guests, off to get a refund/escorted out. Another show was playing just 20min later in another cinema with tons of good seating left but she and the family left with our SWAT Team with no arrest, just a refund.
