Alice Wong is an institution in the disability community, her experience is insanely common. It's a difficult read but worth it.

It's always hard to quantify what the absolute biggest shitstain on this country actually is but the healthcare system and the American treatment, and view, of the sick, elderly and disabled has to be Top 3. Just totally transparent disdain. I had a three week hospital stay in the mid-2000s and it ruined my life for years after.

I've pretty much decided that when I get to be "elderly" that I'm going to move back to Trinidad and spend the last remaining years of my life there.

This is exactly why I fought my ass off for that sweet dual citizenship with Germany. Fuck this.

PS: Not sure why right now but I decided to check out architecture in Trinidad since I don't know shit about the island quite frankly and I'd love to see some of this in person.

I'm assuming you saw pictures of the "Magnificent Seven" mansions?

I’m only 64% sure this post isn’t about Nicki Minaj’s ass

Actually no, I kind of street viewed some random things. I have a weird obsession with "Google Maps tourism" where I go to random countries that interest me and just street view totally random places to get an idea.

This story is really, really difficult to read.

I simply cannot conceive living with such a condition :(

One of the many, many, many reasons I know that we are not a "Christian nation" and anyone who purports that we are immediately goes onto my shit list is the extent to which we deliberately deprioritize taking care of the sick, the disabled, the elderly, etc.

And spend your final years in a third world shithole?

Oh, right...

My ex worked in Assisted Living homes and for those agencies that do home care for many years and the absolute horror stories I heard from her about rampant abuse, sheer malevolence and disdain always stuck with me. According to her what's worse is that nobody gives a fuck. They continuously get slaps on the wrist and if shit gets too crazy they just go out of business and start a new company. I couldn't help but think that this is what "Our Freedom!!! Small Government!!!" looks like in practice.

Yup, that's why Consumer Direct models are way better, let the individual or family do the hiring and firing, training is overrated.

But if we let family members get paid for taking care of their own then poor people might get money.

You have to have something setup for individuals without family who can't make those decisions. Some people in these facilities have family unwilling to take care of them because they consider them unwanted burdens.

  • 6 months later...

Alice is now writing for CNN and her first piece is an update on her situation.

After spending a month in the ICU, Alice Wong relied on caregivers to have a normal life. She reflects on that experience, arguing that the devaluation and lack of investment in care work is an issue that needs to be addressed.
