I tried more Saints Row and it's just not going to workout. It feels like I'm playing a PS3 title and the entire "production values" are so very weak. It's just not hooking me in like it is for you guys. This is a perfect game to rent back in the day or gamefly it and play over a weekend.

I won't say anymore negative things about it but I'll never play it again.

I tried to warn you...

I’m not sure what you’re going to think of the game since I know that you like AAA games with the best graphics possible, and this is more of a AA game with last gen graphics. But if you like the other Saints Row games especially the older ones, then I think that you might like it. Just don’t expect it to blow your socks off from a technical standpoint, because it’s a mid-tier goofy and silly open world urban action game.

Sometimes I think that I know what you’ll like or dislike more than you do yourself. :p

I think that I figured out how to not get the dual wielding assault rifle bug anymore when doing the D4th Blossom attack, I just don’t press anything on the controller while the animation plays out. It’s an automated animation like the takedowns are, so there’s no reason to move the analog sticks or press any buttons during it. I think that every time that I got the bug before I was moving the left analog stick, so I decided to not move the analog sticks or press any buttons during the animation and I haven’t had the bug since. I think that controller input during the animation is what was causing the bug.

I played the game a lot today, and didn’t encounter any bugs. I hope that it will be smoother sailing from here on out when it comes to bugs. I’m getting closer to the end of the game, I’ve done just about every side activity, side hustle and criminal venture on the map that I want to do. I unlocked Planet Saints and decked out my boss with Saints attire, so now I’m looking like a proper leader of the gang.

While I’m still enjoying the game, after two weeks straight of playing it for hours every day I’m getting ready to start wrapping it up and move onto something else at this point.

I unlocked the First Strike Dojo criminal venture which I thought was going to be cool since the missions are martial arts related focusing on melee combat instead of on shooting, but they ruined the missions by forcing you to use melee weapons instead of your fists and by giving you unlimited use of your flaming punch skill which removes any challenge whatsoever. I was looking forward to some fun beat ‘em up action to break up all of the shooting combat that you do in the game, but they went and screwed it up. Also, after completing these missions the flaming punch skill is missing from my skill selection and can’t be reequipped unless I restart the game.

Speaking of bugs, I just got the cutscene that they’ve shown in trailers where the boss is on the church balcony making a speech to the Saints gang but my boss never loaded into the cutscene. This is a somewhat important scene in the story, and I couldn’t even see my boss making the speech. It ruined the entire scene. I’m also still getting the dual wielding assault rifle bug when I do the D4th Blossom attack as well. :|

Almost everything about the game (except for its driving) feels kind of half-baked, and unpolished IMO. It’s as if they got everything working just enough to be passable, and then called it a day. It feels like a beta instead of a finished product to me. What’s most disappointing about this is that the core game and its content are quite good, but it’s all brought down by an overall lack of fine-tuning and polishing. While I’ve still been enjoying it in its current state, I can only imagine how much more that I would be enjoying it if it was in a better state overall.

I finished it, and was fairly satisfied with the experience as a whole. My biggest problem with it were its multitude of bugs and glitches throughout, they unfortunately tarnished the game for me a bit. None were too bad to the point of being gamebreaking, but they occurred frequently enough to be annoying especially when I had to restart the game due to them.

The story and characters were likable for the most part, but the story in general felt a bit rushed to me. It’s a little on the short side, and more story missions would have been welcomed. The ones that it has are quite good, and I would have liked more of them. And I would have also liked some actual backstory to the characters themselves, because the game just kind of throws you into things as if you should already know who they are. Since it’s an entirely new cast, it would have been nice if the game began in a way that let you get a better understanding of how they met and who they were in general. It also didn’t spend enough time showing their rise to becoming the Saints, or spend enough time with them after they became the Saints. Almost as soon as they really start establishing themselves as the Saints and their church base finally gets finished, the game is basically over. And the main villain and what they do just kind of comes out of left field as well. While I was fairly satisfied with the conclusion of the game, it just felt like it came a little too fast.

A lot of the game involves doing its side activities, side hustles and criminal ventures. I enjoyed and finished most of the side content, more than I usually do in these types of games. The combination of story content and side content on offer makes for a fairly lengthy experience, but I would have liked a better balance of the two. The side content felt like it made up a much bigger portion of the game overall causing the story content to feel like it was somewhat taking a backseat at times. The story campaign should have been meatier than it was, and some of the side content should have been left on the cutting room floor as not all of it was good.

The game had the potential to be better than it is, and a lot of the negative complaints about it are warranted IMO. It did release in a somewhat unfinished state, and lacks polish overall. The story content is a bit on the lean side, and there’s a little too much insignificant side content in its place. Character gameplay including melee and shooting combat is decent at best, it would have definitely benefitted from better melee combat. Vehicle gameplay is pretty solid for the most part, driving almost always feels good. The game in general is fun to play the majority of the time, but is missing that certain something to elevate it to greatness.

Happy to see you stuck it out to the end with all the issues you had. Nice review.

Yeah good summary of some of the issues with it, though mine wasn’t nearly as buggy and on PC it’s a real nice looking game. I agree they need to focus more time into the story and there should have been more missions. Especially more missions in Casinos, I mean come on!

The main missions being locked until you complete business ventures side content sucks. I have no desire to do any of them. This might be where I bail on the game.

Yeah, I agree because I was forced to complete business ventures that I wasn’t really interested in completing. It was just their way of padding the length of the game, because the story is pretty short. If you were able to just plow through the story missions without doing anything else in the game then it would only be a few hours long. I was disappointed with how half-baked and short that the story is, if it wasn’t for the side stuff there wouldn’t be much to the game in terms of content. While I enjoyed the game overall, there’s also no denying that it felt somewhat unfinished and rushed to release.

A significant update will be released on May 9 that will effectively overhaul every aspect of the game:

Alongside the launch of The Heist and The Hazardous and the opening of our brand new district, Sunshine Springs, the team have also been hard at work bringing you a huge set of quality of life improvements, new features and bug fixes.

Saints Row certainly has its fans, enough so that the once-dormant series recently got a full reboot. It didn't quite live up to expectations(opens in new tab), and there was a slight sense that despite being delayed it had still maybe come in a little too hot. Perhaps that was the case, because the new patch is a whopper.

Arriving May 9, the patch promises a huge bunch of quality of life improvements, new features, and bug fixes. The update will add the new district of Sunshine Springs, a sprawling resort area, as well as a Selfie Mode, an emote wheel, major changes to combat, and changes to missions throughout the game. Notably, the game's development was shifted over to Gearbox Software post-launch(opens in new tab) so this really does feel like a bit of triage.

"We heard a lot of feedback about the amount of damage needed to down enemies," writes the developers, "and we agreed. Combatant health has been dramatically reduced.  This change, combined with several aim and engagement improvements, increases the pace of combat and reduces the ammo starvation."

The game's also changed how enemy dodges work, and adjusted the time players get to interrupt call-ins for reinforcements, which was apparently too short. There are "numerous" additional changes to combat, apparently, which Gearbox reckon means "combat feels much more satisfying and we can’t wait for everyone to get their hands on it."

I’ll be playing this again next Tuesday since I enjoyed it back when it came out, but its unfinished state especially its bugs and glitches tarnished the overall experience for me. It will be nice to play through it again in a more finished state with improved gameplay mechanics, and new content.

So crazy because I played it at launch and experienced  very few bugs.

I played a bit of this since the latest update and while it definitely seems more polished with somewhat improved gunplay, I played it less than a year ago so it still feels really familiar. It’s too soon for me to want to play through it again, especially since I played it thoroughly the first time.

Yeah it was fun and did seem a little improved (but I didn’t think it was bad before) and the new area is nice so I did some activities there but without new mission/story content that’ll be it for now. I loved the city though. I’d love a Saints Row 4 like super hero expansion there.

They added a newq area with no new missions? Just more activities?

It seems so, unless there’s missions there later in the game which I don’t think that there is.
