General Gaming Dead Space really holds up
ShreddieMercury replied to ShreddieMercury's topic in The Spawn Point
Awesome, yeah it's definitely still horror, but it feels more bombastic and less creepy than the first one. Agreed about the physics, they really made kinesis a viable weapon. Aside from some textures here and there, it could easily be mistaken for a current-gen game. The combat is much more dynamic than I thought it would be, and there have been some crazy awesome combinations of stasis, kinesis, and exploding body parts that are super impressive. -
General Gaming Dead Space really holds up
ShreddieMercury replied to ShreddieMercury's topic in The Spawn Point
I beat Dead Space 1 and really liked it. It seems like they were trying to make Event Horizon: The Game, and they completely succeeded. I then played about 3 hours of DS2, and while I can certainly see that it's more action-focused and less atmospheric, it's a better game in almost every way. Whereas the first game's levels followed a pattern that wore thin toward the end, the variety of set pieces and level designs in just the first couple hours of DS2 make it much more interesting and compelling to play in my experience. From what I've read here, it sounds like I won't mind the direction taken with DS3, though I won't be playing co-op so hopefully it's just as fun single-player. -

It's tempting to be cynical and treat Biden's win as nothing more than drop of water in an ocean of waste given our current crises, but the fact that his campaign overcame relentless misinformation, state-sponsored propaganda, the electoral college, rampant voter suppression, foreign intervention etc. to garner more votes than any presidential candidate in the nation's history AND elect the first female VP is unbelievably inspiring. It feels like time for a genuine celebration, as this is the first bit of real hope that I've felt in quite some time. Way to fucking go America!!!

I bought all three Dead Space games in a recent sale having never played them before, and I'm surprised at how well they hold up. I am nearing the end of the first game, and while the environments are sort of bland and repetitive, the visuals and the gameplay are really excellent. I don't know if these are enhanced on the Xbox One X, but even on the One S there is a noticeable increase in the visuals over the 360. What's the consensus with these? I understand 2 is maybe the best, and 3 is not as well liked.

I just watched Halloween 2018 and it was way better than I thought it would be. Will certainly see this when it comes out. -
How worried about the election are you?
ShreddieMercury replied to CastletonSnob's topic in The Political Re-Education Camp
I'm very worried, not just about the election, but about what everything leading up to this moment means for the future of the country. The fact that literally anybody with eyes or ears thinks that Donald Trump should be president is itself insane. And after four years of watching things spiral helplessly out of control, in the middle of a worldwide pandemic and the worst economic recession in generations, to still throw your support behind him and the sycophantic republicans in congress is essentially malicious and sociopathic. I've always been hard left, but to some extent I thought that I understood the general tenets of conservatism and their merits. It's abundantly clear now that those ideas are a smokescreen for the greed, racism and hatred that lives at the core of the republican party and within its followers. I think the bigger issue, however, is that it's very clear that we will not rise to meet the existential challenges facing us in the next few decades. I just don't see how it's possible given the intense social and economic division that has all but crippled our society. That said, these things are far out of any individual's control, and while the scale and scope of suffering in this country and on this planet is overwhelming, there is always an opportunity to do the right thing, no matter how small it seems. I want to note how I am humbled by the intelligence and compassion that I've seen on this board regarding everything going on right now. There will always be internet bullshit (it's all over this thread!), but this place has served as an excellent resource and an oasis during these trying times, so way to go everybody, keep it up. -
I'm no expert when it comes to software development, and I can't imagine how difficult it is to navigate the balancing act of developing AAA games. That said, it's hard for me to understand how after two games' worth of experience, a blank check, and five years of development time for the flagship brand, you aren't able to absolutely nail it. What is the reason for all of this turbulence? Was the scope too large? Were ideas shifting too much? Is it purely technology? Is the talent and vision not there? It's going to be interesting to read the postmortem for this in a few years.
