We've gotten a couple inches already. My neighborhood is full of steep hills and I just took my truck out to park past the hills so I can get to work tomorrow night. Made it fine, but shit, that wind and snow on my face in 10 degrees is brutal. Yet neighborhood kids are out sledding like nothing in the world bothers them.

Yeah when I took my dog out yesterday it was certainly cold (-5° F), but what made it really uncomfortable was the wind driving the snow and ice crystals into my face. Today it's still cold (about 10° F) but there's much less wind so I was actually almost too warm with how I bundled up (SmartWool base layer on top and bottom, t-shirt, fleece, a down jacket warmth layer, and an insulated shell, snow pants, gloves, hat).

  2. How's everyone surviving out there? I saw a news article earlier that something like 50-60% of the US was expecting some inclement weather this weekend. Here in Portland, OR it's been hovering around 15 degrees F all day but accounting for the gusty arctic winds (30+ mph), the "feels like" temperature has been closer to -5 all day, which is shockingly cold for here, considering that typically in the winter it's more like in the 40s, maybe upper 30s. We've only got a couple inches of snow but it's just brutally cold and windy, in a city that isn't used to handling it, let alone snow.

@Fizzzzle do you have power? I saw that about 155,000 people in Portland don't currently have power. So far I've still got power (and therefore heat) but it sure is miserable taking my dog out, even briefly. :p

How about you all? Everyone hanging in there?

  3. Has anyone heard anything (good or bad) about the MaxPro? It was on Shark Tank a few years ago and Shaq recently became an investor, which has boosted their publicity.

Anyway, I've been debating getting one. In short, I need to start exercising more, and in addition to getting back into running I think I'd like to do some weight-lifting type exercises, having never really worked out in a gym before ( ). Since I'm new to it I don't really know what I'm doing, and the device's app and digital guide service seems like they might be helpful (though I've heard the app isn't very polished).

Would I be better off with just using some dumbbells at home and/or going to a regular gym? I guess the machine is pretty expensive compared to e.g. working out in my company's gym, but it's not outrageously so IMO and I'd even be able to use HSA money for it if I wanted. I do like its compactness and the ability to take it with me if I travel, not to mention preferring to work out at home over in public, and it seems like it would enable a lot of different exercises over the dumbbells.

I don't really like flavors in my seltzer, I just care about strong carbonation. A lot of seltzers are pretty weak on the bubbles. Polar is good, preferably from the cans.

@Nokra I never liked seltzer until I went to Germany and accidentally bought a bottle of bubbly at the airport train station, not realizing how common it is in Germany. I drank it because I was super thirsty and didn't realize my mistake until I took the first swig once already on train. Then it started to grow on me over the course of that trip.

Pretty much the same for me; never drank it growing up, thought I didn't like it, etc. until I kept getting it in Germany. Now I'm thoroughly addicted. :daydream:

  5. I love seltzer and drink 1-2 cans per day. I don't have a particular brand preference, but some general favorite flavors are (in no particular order):

    Polar Cranberry Lime

    Waterloo Blackberry Lemonade

    Waterloo Peach

I own a SodaStream and make seltzer regularly, as well as an occasional cherry soda. I also really like adding a bit of juice to a glass of seltzer water; it adds a bit of flavor and cuts way down on the sugar of just juice.

Shouldn't that shit be welded down?

It's not a "permanent" door. It's called a "plug door" and it's only semi-permanently installed on planes when their carrying capacity is planned to be less than the plane's maximum.

Edit -  To be clear, I'm guessing most of us haven't heard of a "plug door" except for maybe @Pretzel, but that was probably something else. :]

I saw this video and why is that fucking twat filming while driving when he could have just gotten his passenger's video

Gotta score those internet points I guess.

Not to defend the monstrosity that is the Cybertruck, but... who knows what the driver was doing or wasn't doing. Presumably there's some low-acceleration mode that the truck has for snow, right? Right? :s

  8. Alright folks, let's get it back on topic. :p

I think "the best" streaming service just depends on which one has the content you want to see. For me that's generally Netflix, just because I tend to go mostly for Hollywood movies and I think they have the largest number.

Getting back to running more. Doing a lot of zone 2 runs where I keep my heart rate low.. Ran a half marathon this morning that way. Was slow and boring, but I guess it's a good way to get faster somehow. Ran 28.9 miles this week. Hope to increase these numbers. Fuck winter though, can't wait for April or May.

I'm trying to get back into running too, and to make the winter running easier on myself I recently bought these shoes. They have Gore-Tex and I live in Portland where it usually rains all winter. I also got a jacket similar to this one (they're not selling the actual jacket anymore).

And of course once I spent about $300 on winter rain running shit, it has barely rained at all this winter.

Do you have a recommendation for running lights?

I love this place. I was referring to a female that changed to a male. "He" was absolutely devastated he chose to get surgery and change his sex because he wanted to have kids later in his life.  This was an adult thinking this, too.

Sorry @Greatoneshere I referred to them as a female in my other post. I meant no disrespect at all. But you really went after that mistake which is typical.

I have nothing but love and respect for the LGBT community and you will never find a post of mine contradicting that.

Yes, I was friends with two trans people who shared exactly my beliefs I shared here. I will always stand by my thoughts that you must be over 18 to be able to have a sex change. With the guidance of a doctor obviously but the choice is made by the individual alone.

I understand we are talking about an extremely low percentage of people here who get surgeries. But to claim that I'm warped by Fox News @Jason is a complete joke. I don't watch that ever. I don't even visit my parents in their TV room anymore.

I'd figure everyone here would trash me for my opinion but thankfully I don't give two fucks. I absolutely despise the political section of this place but sometimes I have to share my opinion on things. You guys are in a big circle jerk and it's fuckin hilarious. There is no conversation here at all. It's one side defending each other's post over and over again. Also, why didn't anyone attack @SuperSpreader for his opinion? Hmm...

Lead by Mr. Wade who is the strangest person I've ever interacted with. No disrespect. :)

Of course you're entitled to your opinion, but hopefully you also see the general problem with taking your experience with TWO trans people and applying it as a guiding principle to ALL trans people. The two people you know may have had some difficulties or regrets, but thousands of others have not. In fact, one metastudy of 27 other studies (source here) puts the number of people who regret it at less than 1%, of people who transition, and this meta-analysis includes adolescents.

I don't think it's wrong to be concerned about people under 18 having major surgeries of any kind, but supporting a law to ban transitioning is, IMO, frankly to support the oppression of people for no good reason. Medical professionals agree it is a completely acceptable and supported procedure (including for adolescents), the number of people who regret it is tiny compared to the number of people whose lives it improves, and it has literally zero effect on you.
