  1. @Emblazon I'm not sure if this is an issue for you or @Jason but on the SNES theme, there seem to be icons missing for browser tabs:

Maybe not such a high priority at the moment but I noticed that it's missing and figured I'd say something. Thank you both!

Edit - I checked on the other themes and it's missing there, too, FYI.

  2. I know it's not at all new to say so, but the Republican party has really been hijacked. Obviously it's merely anecdotal, but... My parents are lifelong conservatives, have always voted strictly Republican in every election (AFAIK), live in rural Idaho, etc., and even they didn't vote for Trump and in fact voted for Hillary.

I think it's great that Will is following his conscience and has the courage of his convictions. It's too bad that most of the people who need to read his piece in the Washington Post the most are likely part of the TL:DR crowd. :p

    Reading(audiobook) Good Omens.

Just finished the 1st Dark Tower book and I wasn’t really that impressed. Was kinda boring and the ending seemed abrupt.

I remember also not being particularly impressed with the first Dark Tower book, but they get better and better (until about book five or six and then they plateau). Book four (Wizard and Glass) was one of my favorite books I'd read in recent memory, so I'm glad that I stuck with it. Up to you of course, if you have a lot of other books to get to it may not be worth the time investment, but personally I loved them once I got through the first book.

That sounds fascinating. Added to my wishlist.

I'm reading Iron Gold, the 4th book in the Red Rising series.

Awesome, I'll be very curious to know what you think of it once you get to it. :call:

  4. @dualhunter I think the problem was just that it has a white background, so viewing your avatar on any darker-colored theme shows an obvious border:

Here's a version of your avatar with the white background removed:

Since I was only able to get the image from your current avatar the quality may not be the best, but at least it doesn't have the border on the darker themes. If you have a larger, higher-res version of the image I'm happy to fix that instead. :D

    Edit -

Here's what the cleaned-up version looks like on the black theme:

  5. I'm reading Landfalls by Naomi J. Williams for the book club I'm part of here, and only have about 20 pages remaining. It's a fictionalized account of the Lapérouse expedition from 1785 to 1788. As the title suggests, the book takes place at their various landfalls along their journey: Chile, Alaska, California, China, Russia, Australia, and finally the Solomon Islands.  The locations are historically accurate but of course the dialog is fictional, but exceptional. One story in the book was particularly moving to me, and actually made me tear up a bit, which hasn't happened with a book in a long time. It's a very fun adventure story which is at times also very heart-wrenching. If anyone is looking for historical fiction, I can't recommend it highly enough; it was a real page turner.

Next I'll probably read Pet Sematary by Stephen King or maybe And Yet by Christopher Hitchens, because both have been in my to-read list for a very long time. :p

I am just wrapping up a systems project as I graduate and finish school, and it has only re-affirmed my hatred of teamwork in a school setting.

Our project was to design and build a real-world inventory database and website for our school's asset management department. Basically something to track all of the monitors, computers, equipment, etc. They have around 5,000 items on this campus and they use a paper-based system at the moment. We had four months to do it (plenty of time), but barely put it together in time.

Basically our project manager (assigned by an instructor) was the worst at everything and made a guy with aspergers our programmer. Nothing against people with aspergers or similar conditions, but in his particular case he is completely unable to deal with people, timelines, and scope of a project. He also failed the pre-requisite courses for this (C#/ASP.NET, Javascript, etc), but the instructors mercy-passed him because they are idiots and want to keep collecting tuition. This guy literally can't write a single "Hello World" page in Visual Studio without copying someone else's code. Knowing this, the BA and myself (DBA position on the team) did all of the work ourselves. We carried a 5-member team for the entire semester, logging double the hours and writing all of the code and SQL scripts. I just finished writing up my peer review, and it was pretty scathing, including telling off the instructors (and entire program...in polite words) for passing this kid even though they know he is failing and will continue to fail, as they are doing an injustice to him as well.

Fortunately our finished product is great, but only because the two competent members went rogue and did everything ourselves regardless of what the manager wanted us to work on. Obviously in the real world you can't do that, but in the real world you can also just let your boss know that someone else isn't doing anything, and then they can deal with it.

The only group work that should ever be mandatory is the kind where you get to choose your own teams.

Yeah group work blows. I'm doing a "team project" now (and have been for the last 1.5 years) where my team member is actually a friend of mine but he doesn't seem to be nearly as motivated as I am to finish the project. We're using Subversion so I can actually go through and see the statistics about who is doing what, and by percent authorship, I'm at 75% and he's at 25%. :tired:

    I gave you a sympathy "like". :p
