We lost our minds over the world’s biggest pop star last year. Maybe it’s time for a little perspective.

Everything is right in this article.

    Really interesting article, thanks.

    Who's this "we"?

"The media" is one identified "we" in the article. A minority of Swift fans are another. You should read the article. :p

I bartend at George's Corner on Interstate and Killingsworth a couple nights a week. It was funny. We probably didn't need to close on Tuesday because it was just a bit of powder snow, but we did anyway. Friday, when the sidewalks are a fucking death trap, it was like "ehhh, figure it out, capitalism go brrrr"

That sucks, sorry man. Is it at least walking distance to work, or are you having to drive? I vaguely recall you saying you don't drive much, or at all; am I misremembering? Either way, the sidewalks are crap right now, for sure. A few months ago I bought a set of these and they've been a godsend when I have to take my dog out; I can definitely recommend them.

I feel very lucky that I have the ability to work remotely, especially since I live in Portland but work in Hillsboro. Starting a few months ago they had us starting to come into the office at least two days per week, but at least management has (so far) been reasonable about not enforcing it when the weather is crap; besides the general corporate email about being cautious in inclement weather, our manager sent out an email to the team explicitly stating "do not come to campus."

  3. Where I live, Portland, OR, ranks as "only" the 21st most expensive US city to live in, according to US News & World Report, but the median house sale price here is $531,000 according to Zillow. Assuming the (outdated?) standard of a 20% down payment ($106,000 :silly:), a 30-year fixed mortgage at 7.618%,  and following the (again, outdated?) guideline of housing being no more than a third of your income, you'd need to earn about $108,000 per year. And that excludes any insurance, HOA fees, taxes, etc.

The median household income in the US was $74,588 in 2022, according to the Census bureau

We're in classic Portland mode. It snowed on Tuesday, then it rained and got cold enough for all the rain to freeze. Like the best way to get around on foot is on ice skates. Initially all of the business are like "we take the safety of everyone seriously, don't travel, stay home if you can," but after 3 days it's "fuck it YOLO, please come spend money."

Can confirm! I went to a nearby sandwich shop yesterday (Snappy's, if you know it, over on Ankeny and SE 6th) and when I told the guy I was glad they were open, he said "Yeah, after a week of being closed we had to be."

The ice is just so thick, there's plenty of it left even after it got up to 40 today. I'm just glad I never lost power in all of this; some people on r/Portland were saying they were without power for nearly a week and even inside their house it got down into the 30s (when it was closer to 0 outside). :s

It just started raining here, hopefully all the snow will be melted by tonight (right now it's all ice). Everywhere is closed, including my work. It sucks. Fuck the cold. Put me in a swamp any day.

Yeah I took my dog out and he pancaked on the ice a couple of times (even though he's a spry 4 year old Aussie). :(

I have Yaktrax that I was wearing so I was fine, but yeah the sidewalks and many side streets are just solid ice, now even slicker with the drizzle.

My WRX is still worth around $24k. It originally was a tad over $30k. That said, it is a 2016 with only 35,000 miles. The low mileage helps a lot. It also makes it hard to get a new car. I would love to have all the new crap cars have these days but as long as phones connect via Bluetooth to my car I can't justify buying a new car.

I am thinking about getting a new radio for the car so I can have android auto. That may work

Not to get us too far off topic, but I've heard good things about this adapter, though I haven't used it myself.

Over this long weekend I spent several hours cataloging and finally sorting all of my physical movies. I made an Excel sheet which has the title, media type ( 4K Blu-ray, 2K Blu-ray, DVD), where I bought it (because I bought a lot of my movies in Germany while I was living there), the type (movie, TV show, other), as well as whether they have a German audio track in general (to keep up my German). My next step will be to use the Python package called Cinemagoer to automatically look up each title I have and link it to its IMDb page.

Anyway once I had all my data I just sorted them the way I wanted (by media type, then German audio track, then movie/tv/other, then title) and arranged them on my shelves accordingly.

All told I have a little over 300 movies and TV shows, breaking down as follows:

    4K Blu-ray: 32

    2K Blu-rays: 150

    DVDs: 139

    Total: 321

Total with German audio: 92 :D

Meant to include this with the previous post.

Sent my resume in for a few jobs today. One is a potential management position which I technically am qualified for being a supervisor. I will say, the money out there is not what I made so that is disappointing.

Gotta start somewhere though, and just having something will look better than gaps on your resume (as stupid and unfair as that is). Good luck!
