It’s okay if you think his schtick works. But what I said is that a comic who is unable to face the audience when he performs is technically a bad performer, and yet this is somehow a controversial take? I’m seriously scratching my head right now. It’s not like I said he’s unfunny, because he is. Just made the most basic of observation. Maybe it’s because I’m coming from this as a performer and not as fan so I have different things I’m looking out for. I think it’s okay to make note of the shortcomings of comics I like. There are comics who I love who are good with their material but are bad with crowd work, and vice versa. But I won’t list them because I don’t want to anger any fans lol

You may like how he performed, but no comic with a decent amount of experience is gonna say he had a great stage presence. Passable? Maybe, but I wouldn't call it great. If you have excellent stage presence you can get away with subpar material. I've seen some comics kill with barely any jokes. Hedberg's approach is obviously material-focused. Would his act work without his material? I don't think it would. This isn't a criticism, it's just an observation from a comic. I definitely have a lot of respect and he was an early influence of mine.

You should look into this more because Chapelle totally lied about how close the two of them were. And yet presents to have a good understanding as to why why she killed herself despite them not being very close. He didn’t show up to her funeral and avoided contacting friends and family for months and months. He basically exaggerated their friendship so that he could use her as an excuse to make trans jokes. “But how can I be transphobic if I have trans friends?” Heads up, if he’s willing misgendering her on stage after her death then he’s a shitty friend. This is what I despise about Dave Chapelle. His material on stage bothers me less than the fact that he’s exploiting a trans comic’s death for his own benefit. I’ll link to the Facebook post that the comic’s good friend and roommate made about Chapelle. It would be one thing if he played into a socially awkward persona on stage the way some other naturally awkward comics do, but when I watch it it’s obviously not an act. It’s just a nervous person having a hard time being on stage. As someone who has had to conquer social anxiety to become more comfortable on stage, I just find it hard to watch. I think it speaks to the strength of his material that he made it as far as he did without a polished stage presence.

I used to perform standup back in college for a couple of year and I decided to get back into it earlier this year. Comedy isn't quite like riding a bike, so it took me at least one set to get used to being in front of a crowd. When I'm up there, it is my job to make them laugh. If a joke I make doesn't work I either rewrite it to make it work or I throw it out altogether. So much of starting out as a comic is learning how to react to the audience. I can't lash out at them if something doesn't work. The problem with so many of these famous comics is that at this point they are used to performing in front of people who know and love them. They may not even be able to react to their material not being well received because it's not something they have had to do in quite some time. They've lost the ability to adapt which was such a key part to them becoming big in the first place. Sadly this is one area where success can really hurt a comic. When you are only surrounded by fans who are predisposed to finding whatever you say funny then it's easy to lose touch.

I've been watching the Halftime Show at least twice a day this whole week. I still get chills seeing them all stand together at the very end. Remember when this shit was controversial? It's truly wild to see how far hip hop has come in our culture.

It's poking fun at movies in the vein of Alive and the Chipmunks, Smurfs, and Yogi Bear. It would have to be an animated nostalgia property to make it work. I think Chip and Dale is a good choice for this kind of commentary because they are recognizable enough for people my age but not something people are precious enough to get upset over. Or, at least I assumed people wouldn't be precious about them. Personally I'm not bothered, even a little bit, and I loved the cartoon as a kid.

Movies Star Trek 4 is finally a go
Kamusha replied to silentbob's topic in The Performing Arts Centre
The last movie did the best at splitting the difference in feeling like TOS and giving audience what they expect from a modern action/adventure movie. It could have been better, partially because it was so rushed, but it was a step in the right direction. -

James Wan would be a good choice as well.
