  1. Only a matter of time before they try banning LGBT teachers altogether. Title IX is really the only thing standing in their way. If the Supreme Court rules against Title IX, or when really at this rate, they will be coming for us next. I’ve had to have a private conversation earlier this school year with administrators in my school district about what I can and can’t say as a trans teacher. Title IX protects me to tell the students what my preferred name and pronouns are, but I can’t actually tell them I’m trans because of “Don’t Say Gay.”
  2. I’m an openly trans teacher at a low income middle school here in Florida. It’s anxiety inducing having to constantly worry about every single thing I say and I fear my days as an educator here are numbered. I’m currently learning how to code so I can hopefully make a career change and move to a safer state for queer people. But I may not be able to make this change until after the end of the next school change at the earliest, and with the anti trans legislation here becoming increasingly more extreme by the week I fear it won’t be soon enough.
  3. He’s a clown, sure, but for queer people in Florida he’s much closer to Pennywise. Shit is only getting scarier here.
  4. Florida to allow death penalty with 8-4 jury vote instead of unanimously WWW.REUTERS.COM Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is expected to sign a bill on Friday allowing juries to recommend the death penalty in capital cases on an 8-4 vote, a move spurred by... Our dictator… sorry I mean governor began pushing for this once the Parkland shooter received a life sentence instead of capital punishment. Once this bill is signed into law Florida will become the only other state to do this other than Alabama. Look, I’m sure most of us if not all would rather Nicholas Cruz to no longer be alive, whether directly by the hands of the justice system or from a poetic twist of faith (I’m the later), but using this situation to argue for no longing erring on the side of caution is bad, bad, bad. Pro life my ass.
  5. Arguing which right wing commentator has a bigger influence completely misses the forest for the trees. They all blend together and repeat talking points from other far right grifters. If Carlson has the highest rated cable news program then you better bet your ass that other far right commentator take notice and smuggle white supremacist language into their messaging. Just look at how right wing media is obsessed with demonizing trans people. They are all essentially saying the same thing, it’s just that some use language that is more obviously extreme than the other, and listeners get to chose how overtly extreme they want their commentators to sound. Not every right ringer is explicitly calling for the “eradication of transgenderism” like Michael Knowles did at CPAC, but they are all essentially saying it with how they continuously speak about the trans community.
  6. Seeing this one in theaters was a real low point, not just for the MCU but for my life in general.
  7. He somehow found a way to be involved in something worse than Ant-Man Quantumania.
  8. I actually had a blast with this one. Yes it’s Guardians of the Galaxy lite, and yes it’s not the most groundbreaking movie you’ll see this year, but it’s made with real love for the property and I enjoyed it much more than than every MCU phase IV movie.
  9. Finally a Muppets Disney+ original that actually looks good. Making a show based around the Electric Teeth is such a good idea that it’s crazy it took them long to finally make it. Also many queer fans see Janice as a trans character. I wonder if this show will allude to this even in the most subtle of ways.
  10. Okay so the transition from the Stones to the theme from Raiders is *chef’s kiss* but I’m so over every goddamn trailer featuring a classic needle drop. I blame it all on the Guardians of the Galaxy.
  11. As a trans woman still living in Florida you better bet your ass that I’m going to exercise my state’s newly established right to cary a firearm without a permit.
  12. And one last thing @sblfilms, and this is important and I say it with all due respect, but maybe you're not in the position to be suggesting what trans people should or shouldn't be doing when it comes to combating hateful rhetoric. It's not your fight, and your lack of personal experience comes through clearly. I would never tell a person of color what the best strategy for calling out racism would be. In those situations I understand I lack the personal experience so I try to sit back and listen rather than lecture. You certainly don't have any issue with calling out a white user if you think they are wrong or ignorant on issues related to race, and I'm not afraid to tell you that you're straight up wrong when it comes to trans issues. You have a lot of learning to do. I hope you're willing to do the necessary self-reflection and learn how to be a better alley for a community that is under a lot of underserved attacks right now.
  13. But Netflix's stock took a hit during the Chapelle controversy. This is documented. And their subscriptions are down for the first time ever. I'm not saying this is the sole reason, but Netflix's brand has certainly taken a hit. And I think it's a good thing for these issues to have a light shown on them because don't consumers deserve to know if their subscription dollars are being spent to platform hateful rhetoric? And sometimes doing the right things means you aren't always successful. Unfortunately most people don't have the most education or evolved views on trans people. But education takes time and it takes patience. But just because it might not be successful doesn't mean you shouldn't speak out. The allegations against Louis CK didn't stop him from winning a Grammy, but does that mean we shouldn't be discussing his harassment of women? Hell, the discussion on him winning the Grammy probably generated a lot of listeners to the album. But I didn't see you arguing that it shouldn't be discussed. And to respond to something you said earlier, its disingenuous for you to pretend that Chapelle signed a new special BECAUSE of the controversy. He is one of the biggest comedians today, and his specials were doing gangbusters for Netflix even before he went too hard on the trans stuff. No, he got a new deal in spite of everything. But stuff like this, to borrow a phrase from you, has non-economic costs for Chapelle. His brand has taken a hit. His name has more negative connotations in comedic circles than it did a decade ago. It will likely tarnish his legacy if he's choosing this to be his late-career stance. It won't age well at all.
  14. I don't really care about your indifference to comedy. I just don't find transphobia to be something worth being flippant about.
  15. Actually came into this thread to mention Something Wild. Didn't see it until a couple years ago but it's already one of my favorite movies. He will be missed.
  16. If criticizing this special can only help its popularity then why did Netflix delay releasing it for months? Just because vitriolic rhetoric doesn't affect you personally doesn't mean it will go away if you simply ignore it. You have to address it head on, and work on educating the community around you so that this rhetoric won't have an affect. Unfortunately here in Florida and other conservative states it's illegal to teach children that transphobia is wrong, so I have to get a bit more... creative in how I chose to educate my community. But ignoring issues and not bringing awareness/education to them is only gonna make things worse.
  17. Yeah sadly it can be. Some comics don't really have the best social skills. But a comic with good social skills in an EXCELLENT conversationist.
  18. Okay. Just letting you know I have pride in what I do similarly in how I'm sure you have pride in what you do. But please don't group my art form in with a transphobe. I tried to even it out by sharing a set from a trans comic but you didn't seem interested.
  19. So here's the tea that I heard, and I was aware of this before the special even dropped. But apparently Netflix had been sitting on this for months because they were scared of releasing it shortly after Chapelle's special. But ultimately they cave-in and released it because they were scared of a right-wing backlash. Leading up to the release of the special a lot of prominent trans users on Twitter noticed that Gervais blocked them in advanced, even if they never actually interacted with him before. So he knew full well what was about the backlash he was about to experience. At this point, the backlash is really all he has going for him. Would anyone actually be talking about the special if it weren't for these jokes?
  20. Yeah the scenes in LA and NY certainly intimidate me. I'd like to move to a major city eventually to get more work but currently not feeling either city. Half the comics in Orlando were certainly the way you described. You could never have an actual conversation with another comic, it just felt like a continual contest of who can add the funniest line. And from my experience, those who do improv are much less competitive and better at being team players. I've recently started dating someone in improv, and I find his lack of ego to be very refreshing.
  21. What don't you care about it? A little bit of background in case you don't already know, I'm a trans woman comedian who is using my platform to shed light on important issues while also keeping my audiences entertained. So it's kinda weird for me to see an entire art form denigrated just because of some transphobe.
