  1. Funny enough, 40k does have an opening crawl for this reason: It is the 41st Millennium. For more than a hundred centuries the Emperor of Mankind has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Earth. He is the master of mankind by the will of the gods and master of a million worlds by the might of His inexhaustible armies. He is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with power from the Dark Age of Technology. He is the Carrion Lord of the vast Imperium of Man for whom a thousand souls are sacrificed every day so that He may never truly die. Yet even in His deathless state, the Emperor continues His eternal vigilance. Mighty battlefleets cross the daemon-infested miasma of the Warp, the only route between distant stars, their way lit by the Astronomican, the psychic manifestation of the Emperor's will. Vast armies give battle in His name on uncounted worlds. Greatest amongst His soldiers are the Adeptus Astartes, the Space Marines, bio-engineered super-warriors. Their comrades in arms are legion: the Imperial Guard and countless planetary defence forces, the ever-vigilant Inquisition and the Tech-priests of the Adeptus Mechanicus to name only a few. But for all their multitudes, they are barely enough to hold off the ever-present threat to humanity from aliens, heretics, mutants -- and far, far worse. To be a man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be relearned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim dark future there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods.
  2. With the big redesign of the 2023 Prius Prime (extending electric-only range to 100km, and it looks nicer), I've seen people ask a question I hadn't considered before: is Tesla going to roll out redesigns of their vehicles? Are they even working on it? Typically with other manufacturers you see redesigns every 4-7 years. Tesla has obviously been making incremental upgrades to their models, but no large overhauls that I am aware of. It's a death trap for a car brand to not get a visual overhaul after a while.
  3. Over/under on days until Musk claims he can send up a SpaceX capsule to save them (and ultimately does nothing)? This sucks, though. How long does the ISS have supplies for, for events like this?
  4. People who skipped their COVID vaccine are at higher risk of traffic accidents, according to a new study FINANCE.YAHOO.COM The findings could justify changes to driver insurance policies, the authors say. If you don't want to read the article (I know this board ), the tl;dr: is that this study only shows correlation, and likely points to people who refused vaccination also being people who don't think of other people's well-being, care for rules, or acknowledge government regulation. Anecdotally in my life, knowing the people who have refused vaccination even up until today...this fits. The study looked at a tonne of anonymized government data from Canada in 2021 to compare life events of the vaccinated and non-vaccinated.
  5. I agree, people should be allowed to do what they want to/with their bodies. BUT, I also agree with banning the sale of these products since we know how dangerous they are. Let people make their own if they know how to grow, harvest, and use tobacco, but otherwise ban commercial production of cigarettes and their like on the grounds that they are known carcinogens with massive social health negatives.
  6. Twitter no longer allows Ukrainian numbers to be used to verify accounts, meaning no new Ukrainian accounts can be created: Why?
  7. US finalizing plans to send Patriot missile defense system to Ukraine - CNNPolitics AMP.CNN.COM The Biden administration is finalizing plans to send the Patriot missile defense system to Ukraine that could be announced as soon as this week, according to two US officials and a senior administration official.
  8. I like that the high-tech drone appears to just have an outboard motor mounted on the back.
  9. Not sure if anyone has done it yet, but I fed unogueen's OP into ChatGPT and asked for a sarcastic internet forum reply. Here it is: Wow, thanks for sharing your deep thoughts on the topic. It's always refreshing to hear from someone who clearly has a deep understanding of both AI and the inner workings of the internet. I mean, who else but a true expert could have predicted the rise of AI and the potential impact it could have on the job market? I'm sure all the "burger flippers" out there are just quaking in their boots at the thought of being replaced by a machine. And of course, who could forget the potential impact on "craft and all of its belongings" - I mean, what's the point of even living if we can't make things by hand anymore? Thanks again for your insight, Jimbob's neighbor.
  10. CPC lost their first byelection under Poilievre: Poilievre fails to put a dent in Liberals' GTA fortress WWW.THEWRIT.CA Charles Sousa wins Mississauga–Lakeshore byelection by sizeable margin Liberals not only held the seat, they increased their vote share. This is an area that the CPC must win if they want to form government. They keep increasing their vote share in the prairies, but are not doing enough in the GTA and suburbs.
  11. Anyone else read the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy five-book trilogy? There's a subplot in Life, the Universe, and Everything where they go to a planet where a non-stop party has been destructively raging for four generations. It started as a house party, but then the people didn't want to stop so they started forming raiding parties to steal booze and food from the local community. When they depleted it, they attached rockets and artillery to the home and have since floated above the planet, going from country to country with raiding parties to pillage for supplies to keep the party going. This will be like that. The Longest Cocktail Party | Hitchhikers | Fandom HITCHHIKERS.FANDOM.COM The Longest Cocktail Party was a long and destructive party which had being occurring for at least four generations. For unknown reasons, a group of drunk rocket scientist party-goers had outfitted the party with rocket boosters and artillery. After a confrontation with Agrajag, Arthur Dent was...
  12. Cases seem to be rising again here, as well, and our ERs are already above 100% capacity due to this, flu, and RSV. We are having a bunch of work done to our house, and we're lucky the contractors we've hired are very understanding of my wife's medical conditions. They were going to start two weeks ago but one of their crew tested positive for COVID, so they delayed. They also have a mandatory vaccine policy for their staff, wearing masks if the owner requests it, etc. Maybe a stereotype, but that sort of behaviour is rare in the trades, here.
  13. Ukraine struck and damaged a main highway bridge in Melitopol in occupied Zaporizhzhia. It's not fully destroyed, but it is shut down, causing further supply disruptions to Kherson and Crimea. IMO it's looking more and more likely that Ukraine attempts a winter offensive down towards Melitopol to cut the Russian occupied regions in half, and these are shaping operations. EDIT - It appears the detonation was performed by Ukrainian special forces, not by missile. Even more embarrassing for Russia that Ukraine has forces behind their lines.
  14. The smaller NATO nations without huge military stockpiles (that includes Canada) have been doing a decent job of supplying winter gear:
  15. Also, assuming Whelan is a spy of some sort, there is an ethical reason to free the civilian even if the spy is worth more.
  16. You make your living because copyright laws protect studios and allow them to sell product in your theatre and let you keep a cut. What happens when AI movie generators soak up all 5000,000 films ever made and generate new ones on the fly, including reproducing plots, actors, music, etc? Would you argue that this is ethical, and accept that your theatres will close because now there is free content anywhere you want (but doesn't allow showing in theatres)? I look forward to your evasion and pedantics.
  17. But it's okay, because sbl assures us that there will be other jobs for you. Nevermind that they are minimum wage retail jobs.
  18. Strikes reported on up to six Russian airfields in occupied Crimea and Zaporizhzhia, appears to be drones and HIMARS. Big increase in quantity and depth of artillery shelling by Ukraine in Zaporizhzhia. Possibly the first stages of shaping operation for the next offensive, as there are also reports of increase of Ukrainian troop accumulation in Zaporizhzhia.
  19. Five power substations attacked in Pacific northwest similar to strike that caused outages in North Carolina - Raw Story - Celebrating 18 Years of Independent Journalism WWW.RAWSTORY.COM The FBI is investigating at least five attacks on electricity substations in the Pacific northwest similar to one that caused widespread power outages in North Carolina.Representatives from Puget Sound Energy, the Cowlitz County Public Utility District and Bonneville Power Administration confirmed t...
