“We know that everyone wants the next installment quickly. We would also like to deliver it as soon as possible. Since we were also able to see the line of quality from the first installment, we hope to make the next installment even better in quality that can make for an even better experience. We would like to get it out as soon as possible, so please wait for it. I think we can clearly convey the direction when we officially announce the next installment.”

Producer Yoshinori Kitase notes, “The new story of Final Fantasy VII has only just begun.”

Other bits found in the 15 page spread note that (minor spoilers) the new character Roche was meant to appear at some point in chapter 14 to do battle. According to co-director Motomu Toriyama, this character has a high chance of reappearing in the next installment.

Additionally, parts like the Madam M massage scene weren’t allowed to go any further in order to keep the rating, and AVALANCHE’s hideout wasn’t added to show that Cloud didn’t have a close relationship with them yet.

Quickly for them is like 6 years.

Was about to say, that means a minimum of what...3 years plus?

Y'all are silly. They have the battle system, they have a bunch of themes for characters and areas ready to go. You'll get it within the next two or three.

Huh? That game was in development forever.

Three years. And some were saying it'd come out next gen or right around the PS5 launch.

EDIT: Slight correction -- three years from its announcement, but it took less than four to get out. For a new IP in a huge open world and a completely different gameplay system than anything I saw in the AAA space this gen, that's a hell of a quick development.

Get on that silly train because I said three as well!

The game was also shockingly bug-free and solid upon release actually.

I don't get why people thought Kojima takes a long time? Every time someone brought that up -- and I feel it actually happened way more on GAF/Reset than here -- I'd go to his works, and it always seemed like he was efficient!

I'm far from a Kojima fanboy but that forum had a serious issue with that man, it was completely bizarre.

Also think what you will of the game itself, it's an exceptionally well-made and technically solid video game. All his games have been really tight and nearly waterproof in terms of mechanics, even the ones I hated.

Kojima's generally pretty quick. Square Enix absolutely is not. They'll rework the battle system six times because "they weren't satisfied just releasing a new game at full price with the same combat" because Square Enix no longer keeps battle systems.

Then they'll realize that the next consoles are out, and for some reason won't have planned for that despite knowing they're out soon even at part 1's release, so they'll have to "revamp" the game, but then they'll "get ideas" from the benefits of an SSD, and will rework the entire groundwork of the game from scratch, but all the reworks will tire out the team and the game will go radio silent for 5 years until it gets renamed to Final Fantasy 16, followed by several demos showcasing the lighting or some stupid shit.

What I'm saying is they're gonna try to make a playable Advent Children.

HD towns were hard this gen (last gen?) and now 4k towns are hard next gen.

I know we're talking about a Square Enix that announced Versus XIII in the 2000s only to rebrand it FFXV and release it in 2016, and the company that announced KHIII in 2013 only for it to release six years later and feel strangely light on content (at least for me compared to 1/2).

But FFVII Remake wasn't really that long. Went into full production late 2015 and took a bit over four years for a full-length game with a really impressive and deep musical score. They already have a bunch of themes (Shinra, Aeris, Tifa, boss themes, etc.) and a battle system ready, which I fully expect its core to remain the same; I can't imagine this would take longer to create than Part 1 when they had to figure out what what worked and what didn't and record eight hours of new and remixed music from scratch.

I mostly agree with you (in general, and about FF7R's development timetable) but Square Enix is also dealing with a new generation between episodes here, which will affect things. And if episodes take so long it extends to the generation even after this one, that complicates both carrying over saves and timetables as well.

It will. I already got an upvote from @Paperclyp based on my Death Stranding release date prediction. Gamers have way overstated how late games will release.

Not that anyone asked, but I was really hoping FF7 would have been discounted like 10 bucks even by now (I know amazon has it for 10 off but I don’t want a disc). I have a hankering to play it.

I loved it. Did the hardest bosses, and it may have my favorite soundtrack of the generation. They seriously were on fire.
