yuppppp I’m hoping this runs 1440p 120 on a 3080, that would still look damn nice. Wish I liked the game more.

Im more excited for that RDR2 dlss patch actually. RDR2 4k/120 probably looks pretty decent.

Actually runs at 4k/120 with dlss quality on. Ray Tracing seemed so daunting power wise just three years ago and now here we are running games like this at dlss 4k/120. The stars really aligned with pushing ray tracing, the state it’s in right now is better than what I thought it would be when I first got the 2080ti.

I've been on a massive FPS kick because of the Quake remaster. Ended up buying Titanfall 2 and Doom Eternal because it was on sale.

I had originally tried it as a rental when it came out and didn't like a lot about it despite the gunplay being fun so I decided to give it another shot. I think I've almost beaten it now and man, outside of the core combat mechanics this game is such a bloated, silly mess. I get what the devs are going for with the whole ultra-self-aware thing but I've never played a game, even including the silliest anime Action game plots like Devil May Cry, that felt so dumb and lost in its own joke to a cringeworthy degree. Everything from the absurdly garish and eye-searingly ugly and confusing level aesthetics to the throwaway "plot" that interrupts way too often to the endless meme-ish collectibles feels like devs screaming "GET IT? GET IT!?!? IT'S LIKE...REALLY METAL AND STUPID DUDE!" in my face nonstop.

It's weird because I still think there's plenty of great Character Action style ideas in here and it often hits fantastic highs during combat but then there's also such a mountain of other shit that it constantly trips over at the same time. I think I've only died a handful of times tops so far (on Hurt Me Plenty that is) so it's not like I find the game very difficult or don't understand the various systems, I just don't actually like the flow of literally constantly having to monitor my ammo and armor like a hawk. I wouldn't mind the whole chainsaw/flamethrower/glory kill thing if they hadn't designed this sequel around the absolute necessity to use each very frequently. Again, I get what they were going for but I find it highly annoying personally. The actual gunplay and especially fantastic gore/damage system is really satisfying and fun that I wish I could just focus on all that instead of the endless micro-management.

My biggest gripe however might be the, to me at least, bizarre focus on platforming sections. I get what they were going for here as well, breaking up the exhausting combat arenas, sure, but I just find it...just fucking weird and pretty boring at the same time? First person platforming just never feels good to me outside of maybe Metroid Prime but in a Doom game it feels extra bizarre to me. The whole game feels like a 14 year old kid's ADHD attack turned into a video game seemingly without any edits and it's sometimes fun and endearing but often a big 'why...? because it's ironic?'.

But then you have really great ideas like the addition of weak points to the Mancubus, Arachnatrons etc., and them kind of doubling down on the original Doom's idea of certain weapons being specific to certain enemies. I really like that, I really like how much they improved the damage models and overall punchiness of weapons and gunplay and I think earlier on the combat encounters are at least a little more structured than Doom '16.

Doom was my favorite game for ages, I grew up with it and had posters of it and shit, so I totally get that the formula has to evolve to stay even vaguely relevant. I just don't like the evolutionary path the reboot series has followed personally. Despite how much I've trashed aspects of it, I still think it's probably a 7/10 for me somehow because when I DO get in the flow and manage to ignore all the shit that pisses me off, it does feel exhilarating and the gunplay is fantastic. Especially playing through Quake Remastered literally hours before this and Doom 64 again at the same time, I just wish reboot Doom could've followed a more atmospheric, dark and imposing path instead of feeling like the gaming equivalent of a Monster energy drink and reddit Metal memes smashed together by a teenager with severe ADHD. Then again, this formula is clearly working for them, people seem to love this game overall, so I think it's a bit of an old man yelling at clouds thing for me.

On that note, I'd urge anyone who hasn't played it to buy Doom 64. It's always been one of my favorite classic Doom games and it really holds up if you're into that. The soundtrack and oppressive atmosphere are especially fantastic.

That’s a great way to say it, it really seems like someone just poured over monster energy all over the thing.

While I did enjoy both new DOOM games, I can agree with these criticisms for sure.

That Quake remaster was pretty great though, I was surprised at how much fun I had playing through it again. Game holds up really well.

What are some other new FPS games that play more like old FPS? I tried playing Wolfenstein again and I just can't do it. It feels like you're just going from cut scene to cut scene and picking up a million little bits and bobs all the time drives me nuts.

Actually, it's more like if an Ed Hardy shirt drinking a Monster energy drink turned into a video game and then Ahhh! Real Monsters threw up all over it.

Quake held up shockingly well I will say. I mean, even the visuals still work really well in a kind of unsettling abstract way. It's seriously eerie and claustrophobic in general, atmospheric as hell. The Reznor soundtrack works SO well with that game. I actually like it way more now than I did when it came out...I used to be a bit lukewarm on it, I was more into Doom.

I'm incredibly confident that they already did. How much more shit could you possibly cram into that game before having an aneurysm haha

I hated all of the story elements in the new DOOM games. Like, a lot. All of it was so cringe-indusicingly terrible. Get all that mystical alien crap out of DOOM. Just no. HARD PASS.

I didn't always hate the platforming, but thought they did take it a little too far.

My skills are horsecrap these days and I play these games on easy... and I found the DLC games simply too hard. These games are fucking rough and stopped being fun. I plowed through the first one with a lot of effort, but didn't make it very far into the second DLC before throwing in the towel.

Agreed 100%. I love all of the things they added to the new dooms including the ammo management with the flamethrower and gory kills. It forces you to use all of the abilities at your disposal rather relying on one or two weapons and adds a strategic element to the encounters. Doom HAD to evolve and i just don't see how this game could have gone in another direction than what it evolved into. It was never going to be a slow paced, atmospheric survival horror game. They kinda tried that with Doom 3 and got roasted for it at the time. I have no idea what the story is in Doom and don't care. Just give me more monsters to fuck up.

DOOM Eternal had me yelling "OH SHIT RUN AWAY OH SHIT RUN AWAY OH SHIT RUN AWAY OH SHIT RUN AWAY OH SHIT RUN AWAY" at the top of my lungs repeatedly because of its ammo management aspects.  It added a level of intensity and tension to the game that I simply cannot imagine it being nearly as engaging without!

Exactly right. I could never get into a zone and relax because I always had to remember to get ammo at certain points. I thought the way they implemented that mechanic was brilliant. I do agree they went a little far with the platforming, but it was very well done as well in this game and I typically don't care for first person platforming in games.

I remember reading there'll be a Quake reboot. Curious to see if that'll lean more in the direction of Quake 1 and the general eerie atmosphere some of these had later on.

Also, I'm not Mr. Graphics or anything but what fucking sorcery are those Doom Eternal graphics on PS5? It seems to be 60FPS with raytracing, never tanks and the enemy detail especially is nuts.

It ran at 60 on the Xbox one x and it looked stunning. I'm sure it looks beautiful with raytracing and still hitting 60 on ps5.

Let me point out that my rants on here are...heavily abated versions of the shit that'd spill out of my mouth given free rein. You do not actually want this!

Would you say your rants in real life are like someone took your rants here and poured monster energy drink, Ahh! Real Monsters, and Eek! the Cat all over it??
