Once again, I've successfully managed to sleep through a burst of gunfire in my vicinity

At approximately 0412 this morning, someone -- for reasons known only to them -- unleashed a hail of bullets at the lobby windows of a building that's easily within earshot of the building in which I reside.  And much like the last time this happened several months ago, it didn't disturb my slumber in the least.  In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the staccato sounds of gunfire might not have lulled me into an even deeper REM state.

Some people sleep well to the sound of rain falling on the roof, other to the sounds of city traffic.  I just happen to sleep well to the symphony of 9mm rounds being discharged.

You're no longer living in DC proper, right? Somewhere in northern Virginia, IIRC? Maybe time to move even further away? :p

Similar to your story, when I was around 8 years old, I slept through a 5.6 earthquake while on spring break in Oregon with my family. The very next day we went to OMSI (the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry) in Portland and they had (and still have, as of a year ago when I was there last) an earthquake simulator that had a platform that shakes you at varying intensities, up to a magnitude 8 IIRC. :daydream:

In Crete we had an earthquake, actually a 5 pointer, I just kept reading, my gf freaked out (east coasters) then I remembered I was on an island and got a little concerned. But the disparity in our response’s definitely showed Californian vs Jersey
