Voters in Ohio went to the polls to decide whether to approve a measure known as Issue 1 that would raise the bar for constitutional amendments on the ballot.

 

The measure would've raised the threshold to get a constitutional amendment passed from simple majority to 60%, but the point of trying to pass this now was to try and prevent an abortion ballot measure from passing in November. Republicans once again completely eating shit post-Dobbs.

Not just a 60% majority but to get on the ballot itself you need to get signatures from all 88 counties in the state instead of from half of the counties which is the case currently. And I believe there’s some other bullshit too making it harder. 
 

and speaking as someone from a county that put up Assad like margins for trump both times, good luck getting 5% of the registered voters (or something like that) to sign for an amendment there and in every other rural county with similar voting patterns and low population/density

btw, there's a huge movement to get this on the ballot in Florida in 2024. Could help down ballot Democrats as they put money into rebuilding and registering voters.

Apparently in the last days leading up to the vote they were also trying to work an angle that if the measure fails then the sicko libs will pass an amendment to turn your kids trans, or something, so this is also another example of trans panic completely falling flat electorally.

There were Republicans who weren't comfortable with this.  I live in Warren County and voted yes, but not at the margins we usually see in Presidential elections.

I feel like it's a pretty damning indication of how bad they are losing the abortion argument that they thought, "Give up what little political power you as a citizen still have to the politicians that already have a super majority in the state government" was the soft under belly of the debate.

Bills to ban abortion have been rejected, even in deep red states, Trump is almost certain to be the nominee for the 2024 election, and DeSantis has self-destructed after being touted as the next star of the Republican Party.
