Commissar SFLUFAN
The Xbox Series X Is Considered by Microsoft Its Mid-Gen Refresh, as the Xbox Series S Is Their Standard Machine WCCFTECH.COM Back when the Xbox Series X was first shown, Microsoft told Digital Foundry that it was its mid-gen refresh, as the Series S is the standard machine Quote Recently, Microsoft confirmed it has no plans to release a mid-gen refresh for its current generation consoles, and apparently, this is due to the company considering the Xbox Series X as its mid-gen refresh, according to a fresh reveal. Speaking during the latest episode of the Digital Foundry Weekly podcast, it was revealed that, back when Microsoft showed the Xbox Series X console to Digital Foundry, they said that the console is their mid-gen refresh, as they consider the Xbox Series S as their standard machine, and they just decided to release it ahead of time to offer what players might have gotten from a mid-generation refresh right from the start. This is a rather interesting reveal, considering the difference in power between the two consoles and how developers haven't had too many good things to say about the Xbox Series S. Let's see if they keep to that tune if/when the PS5 Pro is announced!
stepee
Considering Sony does not, I think this isn’t as positive of a quote as they thought lol

Best
Yea...ok. PS5 pro will have to make them change their mind. Or when the PS5 pro comes out, drop the price of the Series X.
AbsolutSurgen
Must be why they just raised the price on it.

They won't call their next console current gen. But in a Sega-like move, they could start into next-gen prematurely, a year or two after the Pro. Eventually that becomes their new Series S. Dre801
If PS5 Pro does drop, I'd be shocked if they stuck to this and didn't respond.
Remarkableriots
It takes 3–4 years to release a new game system, so even if Sony released a PS5 Pro, Microsoft wouldn't be able to release a Series X Pro fast enough.
Keyser_Soze
Microsoft wouldn't make a pro, they'd just make the next Xbox. It wouldn't be a refresh it would just be a new thing. I said this years ago but the best way to do this is to treat consoles like cell phones. You want to keep up you need a new one every year. People have no issue buying new cell phones and they cost more than consoles so let's go!

But please no incremental phone-like upgrades. The closest we’ve got to that was the New 3DS. Not a fan of that move.
Keyser_Soze
Also, I said people had no issue buying new cell phones. Well a lot of people have no issue buying a mid gen refresh as well. If the refresh costs as much as a new version they might as well do the new one instead.
Spork3245
Theory: they do have an answer to the PS5 Pro, but it’s their next Xbox instead of a refresh

I sort of like the idea of something like the Xbox One X but actually made to stick around longer, akin to the Series S. It would be the most cross-gen console ever, rather than an honest generational leap. But that's preferable to a mid-gen refresh with a limited shelf life. AbsolutSurgen
At some point consoles will move away from the "generation" model, and move to something more akin to iPhones and PCs -- where they maintain backwards compatibility for a certain period of time. This may be that time for Microsoft.
