I'll believe it when I see it. Hillcoat is a solid choice, but they've tried for decades to get a film version of the story off the ground to no avail. From my understanding, it's been very close multiple times. I know that the difference now is that McCarthy was working on a script, but who knows how much was complete or what stage it was at when he passed.

RIP. Blood Meridian remains the most indelible and resonant novel I've experienced. I've read it three times and I find it more fascinating and brilliant as time wears on. I hope they never attempt a film version; its abstraction is what makes it so powerful, and it's almost like McCarthy was channeling some cosmic truth known only to him.

Time will tell if it lives up to being one of the best, but certainly for my tastes it has been better than any year since probably 2017 (another all-time great). With RE4, Zelda, Hi-Fi Rush, Alan Wake 2, and Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, I have/will purchase more new games in a single year that I have in maybe the last 10.

I don't see all of their projects being the type of painstakingly animated, graphically advanced (and almost comically morose) narrative adventures that eat up that much time though. Game Pass is a haven for the AA, mechanically hook-y type games that are faster and more efficient to produce. I would guess that MS is developing some of these huge adventures, but that it won't comprise their entire first party portfolio in the same way that it seems to for Sony. I could be very, very wrong. This is what I'm hopeful for though, and what I think makes the most sense when considering how to compete effectively. Hi-Fi Rush is the best and most lauded MS published game in a generation, and it's a $30 throwback to gen 6.

Disappointing that many of these are still a ways away, but this is probably the most promising lineup of games from any platform in the past several years. When the Xbox Series X/S launched, it was clear that if MS could get all of their studios organized in a way to stagger game releases appropriately, Game Pass would be unbelievable (and unbeatable) within a few years. It's taken longer than I thought, but this presentation was a glimmer of what lies in store. The relative lack of GAAS is also extremely relieving.

General Gaming Which games haven’t you purchased recently?
ShreddieMercury replied to SaysWho?'s topic in The Spawn Point
Sounds like I'll take a punt on this then, thanks for the feedback @best3444 @stepee. Is this the best year in gaming in quite a while? Seems like with RE4, Hi-Fi Rush (still need to play), Zelda, DI2, Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, etc., there is way more that I'm interested in playing than there has been in years and years. -

I haven't bought Dead Island 2, but now I see it's 20% off. Worth it? -
General Gaming 2023 Game Shows Mega Thread
ShreddieMercury replied to Brian's topic in The Spawn Point
I've been waiting and waiting for Wolfenstein III, so any news on that would make me happy. Other than that, just need MS to buy SEGA so that they can make Outrun 2 backwards compatible. -
General Gaming How many days do you game in a week?
ShreddieMercury replied to Biggie's topic in The Spawn Point
I'd estimate probably 2-3 days per week, for about 1-2 hours. It's my favorite hobby, but now that I'm in my mid-30's, jaded, and have been playing games for most of my life, it's more difficult to get sucked in like I used to. Peak gaming for me was probably mid-to-late 2000's. -
Yeah that seems to be the common consensus haha. Except for @Greatoneshere, who has great taste.

I would like to be excited about their next project, but it's a roguelike so I'm immediately out.

I saw that, it was very helpful! Just curious if there are other impressions. I don't understand how this flew so far under the radar.

Checking in three years later... Did anyone else play this? I see it's on sale during Days of Play, and I'm desperately looking for something for my new PS5, which seems so far like a bit of a worthless purchase.

General Gaming Ok...the dust has settled. Which is better?
ShreddieMercury replied to best3444's topic in The Spawn Point
Elden Ring is Dark Souls again. TOTK is the world's best video game developer arguably at their peak. -
Modern game development is in a really precarious place right now. The expectations are higher than they have ever been for video games given their huge market, while the costs and length of development necessary to meet those expectations in the AAA space grows and grows. And sadly it seems that even when the games do come, the bread has mostly been buttered by insidious monetization. COVID surely had a huge impact on lots of stuff in the pipeline for all of the major players, but at this point I would have expected to see a much more diverse and interesting lineup of games than we've gotten. At least Alan Wake II looks great.

Microsoft The Xbox One reveal was 10 years ago.
ShreddieMercury replied to CastletonSnob's topic in The Spawn Point
I will always remember D1P user Hiawa (not certain of the spelling) having a meltdown after the conference and looking for reassurances about MS's strategy. -
I finished the: ...and one of the solutions to get a chest blew my mind. There was a small square in the middle of the gate, but you can't jump high enough to climb through. I eventually: I'm pretty sure that solution isn't the most obvious, and I maybe missed a button somewhere, but it was so satisfying to come up with an idea that worked like that. I'm finding this to be the case with almost any obstacle. The game is constantly encouraging lateral thinking in a way that almost nothing has from my experience. It's remarkable how these systems work together.

This really feels like a full realization of what Breath of the Wild was going for. I can't fathom how they balanced the collision of all these emergent systems with the very, very well crafted main quest. I'm not super far into the game, but I've had more emergent scenarios that created awesome stories than I have in any other game I can remember. I've also been following the primary quest, and it feels much more like a classic Zelda title in certain sections than BotW did. I honestly don't know how any fan of these games could complain at this point. This is a an absolutely peerless video game that I hope (but cynically assume will not) be a turning point in the evolution of overall game design, at least for open worlds. It feels to me so far like the kind of push that games haven't had in years and years.
