  1. I could write a PowerShell script in 5 minutes that could parse that out with regex, assuming I had some kind of database or table/CSV/JSON with the correct meanings of the stuff. It's definitely not difficult, I would bet it's mostly because if they change it then it forces all the different companies/software involved to change their systems, and most companies never budget for that kind of stuff.
  2. Apparently this is a reason why Germany not only doesn't want to send tanks, but is also stopping others behind the scenes: greed Kampfpanzer Leopard 2: US-Rüstungsinteressen lassen Scholz zögern WWW.NZZ.CH Bisher wurde die Lieferung von Leopard 2 an die Ukraine immer unter dem militärischen Aspekt diskutiert. Doch mit Waffenlieferungen sind auch rüstungspolitische Interessen... EDIT - Also, to be clear, both the US and Germany are entirely self-interested when it comes to the deployment of tanks in Ukraine. The US wants to pick up new customers in NATO/Europe, and Germany wants to keep customers; either of them deploying their own tanks hurts the bottom line. Having said that, the US I think actually wants Ukraine to win, while Germany I think doesn't really care as long as the status quo (of Germany being seen as the "leader" of Europe) is maintained. But I think Germany's strategy is a lose/lose: If they allow Leopards to go to Ukraine, they lose customers to the US. If they refuse to allow Leopards to Ukraine...then who is going to want to buy more in the future, knowing that Germany might prevent them from using their own weapons from being used in combat? The US clearly wants people to use American weapons, and is a far more advanced and reliable supplier.
  3. Interesting. Basically, Bakhmut matters more as a way to pin down Russians and make them pay, and less for the geography. But unfortunately, Ukraine can't take advantage of the Russians being pinned because Europe won't give them weapons.
  4. Russia has made it clear that they will accept 800+ dead men per day to take Ukraine, and Ukraine can't pay that same price. So, they need to be smarter, but they also need weapons that outclass Russia. The west needs to send tanks. The US apparently told the Ramstein group that they believe Russian casualties currently sit at 188,000. It's believed that while Ukraine has lost less men, they are still close to that.
  5. Fortunately in taxpayer-funded education IT my job is a bit more secure...many people chided me for taking a $50k-$100k public job after I went back to school instead of a full-stack developer job, but I regret nothing after the last few years.
  6. Prosecutors Say Elizabeth Holmes Bought a One-Way Ticket to Mexico WWW.THEDAILYBEAST.COM The attempt to flee the country after her conviction was thwarted by the government, prosecutors alleged.
  7. Teaching has the same issue as healthcare: incredibly high-stress work environment where many of your "customers" (parents/patients) are hostile, and where you are not getting paid remotely near what you should.
  8. "Struggling to find workers willing to work for slave wages, fast-food restaurants are turning to a new solution: slave robot labour."
  9. GERMANY NO tanks from Germany, but they won't stop others from sending German-built tanks...but they also haven't approved any export licenses EDIT - Maybe premature. Germany is not doing themselves any favours with the language they are using.
  10. Yesterday Russian millbloggers said that Russia was launching an offensive along the southern Zaporizhzhia line...but it turns out they simply sent hundreds/thousands of men across fields without any armoured support, and they were rebuffed completely:
  11. NETHERLANDS No announcement, but their foreign affairs minister says they are willing to provide not only Leopard tanks, but also F-16 jets, if Ukraine makes a request
  12. Expect a tonne of weapons announcements out of Ramstein today/tomorrow. I will try to post as I see it. First up is: FINLAND $433 million military package. Double what they have previously sent combined. If the US created a package worth the same % of GDP, that would be $34 billion Not disclosing what they are given Not disclosing when they are giving it Both of the above for security reasons to avoid Russia intercepting deliveries It appears this will include many heavy artillery systems as well as other munitions. Finland says it does not include Leopard tanks. SWEDEN Archer mobile artillery systems
  13. Politicians are getting the blame for a lot of inflation right now, but the reality is that corporations (across the board) are also engaging in price gouging. So...I guess politicians are partly to blame for allowing corporations to have grown so large, and to go unchecked in this area.
  14. Yeah, when the news first broke that this was a single person's fault, my first thought was "well...is it really a single person's fault if the system allows a single person to just stop all flights?" There should be a huge change request process in place that implements in dev environments, gets multiple people to sign off, etc. I hate those processes as much as anyone...but in systems that are large as all airlines in the US, they are necessary.
  15. Apparently Germany is the holdup on tanks for Ukraine, with Scholz seeing them as a "red line," that German vs Russian tanks fighting would be unacceptable. Germany fucking up again.
  16. Also...just get rid of real guns on set. Yeah, I get it, fake guns with CGI flashes aren't "as real," but neither are fake explosions, and audiences will accept them in unrealistic situations. Or just build guns with internal gyroscopes/mechanisms that give a kick when the trigger is pulled, and then add the flash in post (if you need that kickback).
  17. Fake turf is becoming more common in my city, especially in newer areas with denser housing (detached and semi-detached row houses with tiny yards, etc). It's better than wasting water on a lawn, for sure (and still allows rain/snow to get into the soil)...but man, it looks awful considering we only have naturally green lawns for about 4-5 months per year. Kind of weird seeing bright green peaking through snow in November. I prefer if people go to lower-maintenance lawns. We have a decent-sized front and back lawn, and we are transitioning to a mix of grass and clover. The only real reason we water is because our soil requires it to keep steady and prevent our house from shifting too much.
  18. I've continued to wear my N95 to work (fortunately only in the office 2 days per week) and while in any indoor situation with others. I'm maybe in the 5% continuing to do so, where I live. I realize I don't really have an endgame plan, but I also know my wife is more vulnerable, so I don't want to risk her getting COVID or having other complications due to it. More and more people I know are experiencing long COVID issues after contracting the disease more than once. I don't know what the endgame for society is, with this.
  19. "These damn libs keep taking away our good coal jobs and don't give us any options!" "Hey, here are 2500 well-paying union jobs in a greener industry" "Fuck you commie!"
  20. The data I've seen from Israel seems to show the bivalent booster is quite effective against the newer variants in terms of preventing severe infection/death.
  21. Yeah, whenever I've had Subway heat my sandwich up...it's just soggy.
