  1. There are some places where Canadian jets would be able to reach (in the US) than American jets, where Canadian bases are closer. It's not an issue. The whole point of NORAD is that both countries cover the entire continent and work together. Should Canada have greater capabilities in the Arctic? Yes. Was this situation anything to do with that? No. Also you are being pedantic with the order/authorize. NORAD wanted to take the jet down, but couldn't without Trudeau's order/consent. He gave it. No one is suggesting that Trudeau can directly order American forces under NORAD to do anything he wants. NORAD is constrained to certain operations, namely the air defense of the continent.
  2. My thoughts on this overall issue, in no particular order: Extending human life without increasing its quality shouldn't be the end-goal, but it is still a good thing Something I often hear from younger people is "who would even want to be 100?!" Well...someone who is 99 We can't judge the life of others, especially their internal lives, even if they have chronic issues/disability We do have a higher quality of life in elder-age compared to the past. Or, at least, we have the ability, if people treat themselves well This obviously won't apply to all people and situations, based on many more factors than just people's actions/choices But a person who is 80 today has a very good chance of being much healthier than someone 80-years-old in 1923 Quality of life hasn't kept up with overall length of life, but it has gotten better (or, at least, it has for those with the means/chance/etc to make it happen) Would I want to live to 150 but have the quality of life be "very bad" after age 90? My answer today might be no, but that's because I am not currently 90. If my 18-year-old self could experience the general aches and pains of being 38 then they might also be horrified, but I'd certainly like to live to be 39. I'm not about to judge someone who has a poor quality of life but wants to keep living. Having said that, we should always be open to those who wish to end their life, provided the options have been properly be explained, etc. But the goal should be increasing quality of life as we extend it. Obviously someone who is 120 isn't going to have the same quality (physically) as someone who is 20, on average, but that doesn't mean their life isn't worth something, especially to them and their loved ones. To base societal decisions only on perceived quality is an insult to those who are disabled, etc. Having said all that, I do think one area where we perhaps expend too much energy/resources is temporarily extending life at great cost to quality. There are definitely situations where incredible effort/cost/pain is expended to extend a life by a few days, and where the person may have personally chosen to end it. My own wishes are to not go through that, should I receive a terminal diagnosis. But, that choice should still be left up to the person in that situation.
  3. As usual, you have an uninformed take (well, informed by the right-wing infosphere in Canada which is now saying that Trudeau utilizing NORAD shows he is weak). Releases by the Canadian government show that both Canadian and American fighters (likely CF-18 and F-22, respectively) were dispatched under the auspices of NORAD. American fighters were first to arrive on-scene, and were given the order by Trudeau to shoot the object down. The CF-18 has an operational flight ceiling of 50,000 feet, similar to the F-22, more than enough to take down the object. NORAD worked exact as expected in this instance. The object had just crossed the American/Canadian border when aircraft were directed to it, and the American base was closer. If the object had been spotted over, say, NWT or any of the western provinces, then Canadian fighters would have been first to reach it. If Trudeau had given the order to wait an hour (or whatever) until Canadian fighters had arrived, then you'd almost certainly be in this thread parroting a right-wing talking point about how Trudeau needlessly put Canada at risk by waiting.
  4. Demut is just so dumb. He probably doesn't respect pronouns, either. Honestly, I'm done in this thread if he's around. Can't believe we tolerate him returning. Bye.

  6. Appears to be another over Montana, and maybe one near Seattle (jets just scrambled, there). Based on airspace blackouts and eye witnesses.
  7. Safe to assume this is China testing NORAD's capabilities and response times with different types of balloons/objects?
  8. Canada doesn't have F-22 jets, so this could be a problem. Can CF-18s take out balloons at 50,000 feet? EDIT - nvm, already shot down:
  9. Russia is draining a massive Ukrainian reservoir, endangering a nuclear plant WWW.NPR.ORG Satellite data show water levels plummeting at the Kakhovka Reservoir. The reservoir supplies drinking water, irrigates vast tracts of farmland, and cools Europe's largest nuclear plant.
  10. Pro-gun lawyer shot with own weapon by MRI scanner dies WWW.TELEGRAPH.CO.UK Leandro Mathias de Novaes took concealed firearm into hospital where machine's magnetic field set it off
  11. Hmm, US is now saying it wasn't a balloon, was 40,000 feet up, and posed a "reasonable threat" to civilian air traffic. No indication it was manned. So...a UAV of some kind?
  12. Walt Disney Co. Poised To Lose Control Of Florida Theme Park Special District As Lawmakers Pass Bill For Ron DeSantis-Backed State Takeover DEADLINE.COM Florida's House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed a bill that will strip The Walt Disney Co. of control over special district. Some people like to think that this will hasten Disney's gradual exit of Florida, but I will bet they do the opposite and fall in line. There's nothing that corporations love more than fascism.
