  1. Yeah they've started this in Canada as of a few days ago, and the public reaction has been quite negative.
  2. Man, I remember paying $100+ for SNES games back in the early-90s. Converting that to today's dollars: $180 Canadian $134 American That probably explains why we only had 4-5 games for that console.
  3. Is there a chance that our interconnected global civilization ends in some form before 2100? Yes. Is there a chance that advanced civilization (even more contained/less interdependent) ends before 2100? Far less likely. Is there a chance that humanity as a species ends before 2100? Not at all, barring a completely external (i.e. extraterrestrial) event. At this point my opinion of a worst-case situation in 2100 is a fascist world order where some countries (including the US) continue to be very advanced and powerful, but much of the world (Africa, south Asia) has degraded.
  4. By all accounts (from both sides), Russia's southern offensive aimed at Vuhledar is being smashed by Ukraine. Horrible videos of dozens of tanks/BMPs destroyed, with tank crews on fire and being run over by their own retreating vehicles. It seems that this is another case of Russian command telling them they have to take the town at all costs, and they keep hammering against the Ukrainian anvil with no progress. Besides mines and artillery, Ukraine is even using HIMARS strikes in localized combat against Russian forces at the front.
  5. It will be interesting to see what Russia is able to accomplish. From the sounds of it, so far they've been repulsed by Ukraine in most places except for their continued effort near Bakhmut. If (and that's a strong if) Ukraine is able to contain Russia's advances, then it will provide Ukraine an opportunity to launch their spring offensive as the Russian effort culminates. But that's assuming Russia is able to sustain their push for 2-3 months, including into the muddy season. It's also possible that Ukraine cannot contain this push and loses a bunch of land in the Donbas.
  6. I've avoided watching most videos, but I did see one of a seemingly modern apartment building collapsing. Horrible to know that we have the design and technology to prevent such collapse in new builds, but those standards aren't in place around the world (or, are available and perhaps required on-paper, but in reality are ignored through corruption).
  7. Man, there are some pretty childish takes here from some pretty jaded adults (and the usual ones, at that). Nintendo's quality and style is the same as it has been since Gamecube; if you think anything has changed, it's almost certainly you. It's like people who enjoyed a show as a 10-year-old complaining when a sequel sucks turd in comparison—maybe you are just different, now, and have different tastes. I am 100% in agreeance with Nintendo's business practices not being great (online support/systems, hardware not as great as others, making it hard to get older games, etc), but only someone completely blinded by adult insecurity could claim that their quality has dropped off. It's kind of sad seeing the usual few users come in here and claim they don't care about Nintendo anymore...yet keep coming back to make the same tired rage.
  8. Ukraine war: Elon Musk's SpaceX firm bars Kyiv from using Starlink tech for drone control WWW.BBC.COM The firm says it has limited Kyiv's ability to use its Starlink satellite internet for military ends.
  9. Borders in the Middle-East not aligning with what constitutes an ethnic/cultural population? What a shock! Another win for the British and French.
  10. Yeah when you see him you imagine a George W Bush-type of sound (probably because they have the same stupid look on their face).
  11. Twitter appears to be having some issues at the moment, with users seeing messages that they've exceed their daily tweet limit: Not surprising that they have technical issues more frequently, now.
  12. Yeah I call bullshit, especially since many more studies show that masking is effective.
  13. Zelenskyy just address the UK Commons in-person at Westminster. During his speech, he presented the flight helmet of one of Ukraine's fighter aces, and thanked the UK in advance for fighter jets: Obviously no jets have been yet announced, but the PM did say that the UK will be training Ukrainian pilots.
  14. My wife and I aren't having kids and we're not too scared about it. The reality is that most elderly people in western society are already abandoned by their parents. Most end up in care homes and see their kids once or twice a month. So, our plan is just to have enough money that we can pay for care (and be with each other).
  15. They fall for it because they view everything through the simplistic lens of us vs them. So if they are for something, then we must be against it. The content/context doesn't matter at all, and this view allows them to ignore all details and facts.
  16. Ukraine: Bundesregierung genehmigt Ausfuhr von Leopard-1-Panzern - Business Insider T.CO Rheinmetall und FFG dürfen 187 Leopard-1-Kampfpanzer an die Ukraine liefern. Ihr eigentlicher Wert liegt in der Munitionsversorgung. Germany will allow the export of 187 Leopard I tanks to Ukraine. These aren't as capable as Leopard II tanks or other modern equivalents, but they will still be useful for Ukraine in a few ways. First, they will allow the replacement of old Soviet stocks with systems that can be more-readily supplied with ammunition from allies. Second, they can be used to support infantry in ways similar to IFVs even if they can't stand against larger Russian tanks.
  17. It's kind of crazy how, in the last ten to twenty years, we've basically gone from "the future belongs to China" to "America forever, baby!"
  18. What are good charities that provide aid in Turkiye? I've seen one recommended quite a bit in a resetera thread, but it only accepts wire transfers. I assume the Red Cross operates there? EDIT - I also only just found out this morning through this that Turkey changed its English-spelling to Turkiye (technically Türkiye).
