Japanese Horror Flicks - Let's throw some suggestions around

Recommended Posts

I've re-watched a few Japanese horror films as of late and I know there are quite a few horror, and film in general, fans on here. What are some of your personal, possibly more obscure, favorites? I'm really into this atmosphere right now and want to keep it going.

In no particular order, here are the ones I returned to recently and probably my favorites:

Kwaidan

Ringu

Dark Water

Kuroneko

Oh, I haven't seen Pulse since it came out, very good suggestion. I'll rewatch that one. I remember it being a very lingering dread kind of thing, it was definitely eerie.

@Greatoneshere I really like Audition as well but could never get into Ju-On. It looks so cheap yet it's somehow too clean at the same time. I tried to watch Ichi one time but that woman beating scene early on was too much for me, probably one of the few movies I turned off due to the levels of violence weirdly enough. I should give it another shot one day.

House is definitely funny, that's for sure. I couldn't believe what the hell I was watching.

I've never seen this one but I'm familiar with the name. What is it about?

I hope Tony Iommi's in it.

A man is “metal fetishist” and becomes cursed. It is body horror to the extreme.
watch just about a 40 seconds to get an idea of what your in for

NSFW

This looks like the House! of body horror, the effects are really funny. I'll give it a shot for a laugh.

You don’t say. Keyser mentioned Korean, and IStD is undoubtedly better than any Japanese horror, so I figured I’d mention it.

Just say it

We all look alike :p

I Saw the Devil is a fantastic movie, but I wouldn't really consider it a horror film at all.

It wanders into that territory enough I have no issues calling it horror, Its also a thriller and a revenge film.

I have never seen it as horror, but it's certainly a movie I'd just flat out recommend, no caveats required.

I think these Korean revenge movies loosely fall into the horror category. Kind of like Oldboy, not really "horror" but has enough unnerving elements to be classified as such.

It also says Horror on IMDB so you lose because that website is like the bible.

Seriously, I don't care at all what it is. It's called I Saw The Devil so Horror enough, it's Japanese-by-Asian-association, I'll watch it!

This shit better be good after all this hype in this thread. Will probably watch it tonight.

PS: I'm not gonna lie, I didn't know Oldboy was Korean. I never really thought about it either way I guess but I'm not sure I knew it was Korean. I've only seen it once though around the time it came out I think?

South Korea and Japan have completely different cultures and as a result are completely different countries - their films feel entirely different, so the distinction is important, but either way, I Saw The Devil is great.

South Korean live-action cinema is a lot better overall compared to Japanese live-action cinema.

-Audition

This movie messed me up big time. I'm not entirely sure why. It probably wouldn't have been nearly as disconcerting without subtitles. I watched it by myself, during the day, and had to walk around the mall for a bit after it was over.

Of course I know that, I was just being a smartass, come on Mr. Great

If we're just conflating Japan and Korea, The Wailing is fantastic.

This looks cool. I'll add this to the list with I Saw The Devil.

Fine, let's call it recommend Asian Horror flicks, I don't care, Japanese appears to be too narrow. I also forgot to throw in Onibaba by the way, I recently re-watched that as well and love that one.
