Keyser_Soze Posted December 9, 2019 Posted December 9, 2019 Quote Playmobil: The Movie opened to $670,000 at the domestic box office after its December 6 release. Since STX opened the movie in an optimistic 2,337 North American theaters, that came down to a per-screen-average of $287. PlayMobil's $660,000 domestic opening puts at it #4 on the list of worst wide openings, for movies that were released in more than 2,000 theaters. It's just ahead of Jem and the Holograms and behind Saw's 10th anniversary release, per Box Office Mojo. https://www.cinemablend.com/news/2486311/why-playmobil-the-movie-just-had-one-of-the-worst-box-office-openings-ever Yikes! silentbob Posted December 9, 2019 Posted December 9, 2019 I still haven’t seen a trailer or an ad on Canadian TV for this movie. I don’t even know if my local theatre has it playing. Partly why it did dick all box office wise, and competing against Frozen II. Oh, but I’m also sure it isn’t a good movie. Quote
Spawn_of_Apathy Posted December 9, 2019 Posted December 9, 2019 I don’t think I’ve even heard of this movie. Quote
Keyser_Soze Posted December 9, 2019 Author Posted December 9, 2019 I only knew it was a movie because of FML. Shame that it isn't good. I liked Playmobil more than legos back in the day. Quote
TheLeon Posted December 9, 2019 Posted December 9, 2019 I saw a trailer for it in front of A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. It barely looked like a movie. Quote
TwinIon Posted December 9, 2019 Posted December 9, 2019 I never saw a trailer and didn't see any other advertising for it other than a cardboard stand at my theater. Can't say I'm shocked it bombed. It could be that they knew it sucked and decided not to put any ad budget behind it. Quote
johnny Posted December 10, 2019 Posted December 10, 2019 My theatre had like 5 showings of this per day over the weekend. 5 too many. Quote
Ghost_MH Posted December 10, 2019 Posted December 10, 2019 Why open in so many theaters if you aren't also going to advertise it? I heard if this movie for the first time, late last week. Even then, it was only in reaction to how much like a shitty rip on the Lego Movie it looked. Quote

Almost assuredly some contractural obligation in the financing of the movie that it be released on so many screens. It’s also cheap to distribute digitally (Deluxe/Technicolor is the most expensive at $95 per “print”, other smaller shops are around $75 per “print”) so there is little reason not to go into as many locations as you can book the film in.
