In a dramatic setback, House Republicans have failed to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, forced to shelve a high-profile priority — for now — after a few GOP lawmakers refused to go along with the party’s plan.

They'll try again once Scalise returns from his latest round of cancer treatment which will probably be next week.

Meanwhile, we still have Matt Gaetz to entertain us with gems like this one:

Wouldn’t it have been nice to still have Kevin McCarthy in the House? But McCarthy after being dislodged as speaker took his marbles and went home, he would have been a reliable vote for impeachment…The abject selfishness of Kevin McCarthy contributed to this result.

LOL, I know... I know... but after MONTHS AND MONTHS AND MONTHS of endless discussions and articles about this, Fox News didn't even have a main feature article about this yesterday. They have one about someone bringing a stuffed shark to a library a week ago, but not this...

(EDIT: I spoke too soon, they are now featuring it... oh well... there still wasn't a peep yesterday... like it never happened...)

Whether or not it’s true I have no idea, but conspiracy minded folks are saying that four safe R’s who no one cares about were allowed to “defect” and kill the vote because it’s DOA in the Senate anyway.  99% of Republicans get to say they were in favor of it, they get to bitch and moan about democrats protecting their own, they don’t have the embarrassment of a failed trial in the Senate, and everyone will forget the four R's that voted no by the time it matters.

No idea how likely that is or not.

People had similar theories around what Sinema and Manchin were doing the last few years. The Dems can be like, well, we tried, what are ya gonna do? Meanwhile, nothing changes and the status quo is maintained...

It's very convenient...

That said, this impeachment of Mayorkis was such a hot load of crap. Every single Republican knew it was a terrible idea to impeach a top level cabinet member because of policy disagreements. What kind of batshit crazy precedent would that set?

Anyway, it also doesn't matter. Bipartisanship is over in this country... Joe Biden could move the entire military to the border to immediately stop all crossings while also rounding up all immigrants for immediate deportation and the right wingers would still complain endlessly.
