Unlike Olympic men's soccer, the women can send a full roster of professionals albeit the roster will be cut down from 23 to 18 (seems a bit silly). It's the only tourney besides the World Cup where they can test their mettle because CONCACAF just isn't that competitive. The USWNT is in a major transitional phase. The team has already qualified but the rumored new coach, Emma Hayes, won't be joining the team full-time until May, when her commitment to Chelsea is fulfilled. A lot of the older legs, mainly Alex Morgan, may not even make the roster especially since it's only 18. Conspiracy brain says if she makes it, it's for marketing purposes. Interesting times ahead.
