This is true. It's never something I buy, but when I end up having it in like oh wow this is delish.

Anyone here ever had Milanesa? ( @Joe @sblfilms )

Yeah, it's like latin Schnitzel from my experience. Both being fucking delicious. Not that Milanesa is Colombian (I think?) but man, I've been to Col twice and that was some good eating.

I had to look it up but basically yes! A thinly breaded meat with a squeeze of lime, usually with some combination of beans, rice, plantains, or potatoes!

We have Milanesa in Mexico also, I think it comes from Milanese the Italian dish.

My area, and quite a bit of friend circle, is heavily South American and Caribbean so I gladly get to indulge in some killer food. Mix that with OG German and Polish delis and butchers near me and I'm basically spoiled as hell.

There is also this badassery named Jägerschnitzel. Basically "hunter's cutlet". It's a Schnitzel, so very thinly pounded, juicy chicken cutlet in that fried breading but with a heavy gravy & mushroom sauce.

Usually served with roast potatoes or mashed potatoes or...well some form of potato.

I feel like so many cultures have their own version of it. It’s so good and simple.

It's funny to me how many European staples are based on potatoes, but they originate in Peru, so what the fuck we're people eating 530 years ago? I'm guessing some gourd type root vegetables?

Before the introduction of the potato, those in Ireland, England and continental Europe lived mostly off grain, which grew inconsistently in regions with a wet, cold climate or rocky soil. Potatoes grew in some conditions where grain could not, and the effect on the population was overwhelming.

Just had to look this up as well despite being somewhat of a medieval history buff. You'd think I'd know this shit. Looks like potatoes became popular for the reason I expected, famine and war and being easier to grow essentially. Good combo for its massive popularity.

Also:

Sir Walter Raleigh introduced potatoes to Ireland in 1589, and it took nearly four decades for the potato to spread to the rest of Europe.

Fuck now I'm in the rabbit hole and was curious about, for example, Japan and potatoes

Quote

The potato was probably brought to Japan by Dutch traders who established an enclave in Nagasaki early in the 17th century. But widespread cultivation of the tuber did not begin until late in the 19th century, when it proved well suited to the cool summers of the northern island of Hokkaido.

That guy had to trade it with the Spanish somehow with that name.

So basically they lived off of bread and oatmeal-slop. Nice.

Apparently from what I'm reading further is that Charles Darwin was the first outsider to discover it possibly. Or at least make note of it in a positive way, pretty interest all around. One rarely considers, or at least I don't, where exactly which food comes from or what cultures did prior. I can't even picture the entire rest of the world without potatoes.

Damn dude:

Also Peruvian food rules in my experience

With medieval Europe, it's safest to always assume that whatever was the most depressing, dark and most peasant-hating option available, that's how people were forced to live lol. Oat slop seems very appropriate.

I just learned about Prima Nocta yesterday.

Yes. The more you learn about that period, the more you realize how abjectly cruel a lot of people's living conditions really were. There are so many small details that would blow our minds in modern times. The way taxes and property were handled too was totally insane.

On a somewhat unrelated note but in line with my previous post, my grandmother, who was born in 1939, always told me that after the war her and her mother regularly survived on various forms of tree bark. It's one of those things I try to remind myself of sometimes when I get overly whiny about not being able to do xyz in my life.

My condolences. I do this too and all my cat wants is fucking Friskies with as much saw dust and rat bones as possible. My girlfriend refers to it as "white people pet food" because she lives under the continued delusion that her people have indeed not been infected with crazy-ass pet parent behavior yet. I say LOL to that, lady.

I just wasted $60 on a carton of some fancy shit that he now won't eat
