Yes a plastic squad is usually 50 USD for 10 Space Marines. This guy is a resin marine. Those are 42-45 for a 5 man squad plus 20 for the boltguns. A troop choice in Horus Heresy is a tactical marine squad and those 1 Sarge plus 9-19 Marines. So 288 dollars or 100 dollars for a 20 marine squad. I have I want to say 20 Mark 6 (this marine is a mark 6). Do want to get more. There is a solid rumor of a new plastic set for the Mark 6 marines. Still want to get another 10-40 resin mk 6 before the switch to plastic. It's worth it if you like model making and painting. The game is cool as well. It's nice playing a game in person.

Any tips for getting into painting miniatures? I don’t play any of the big games like Warhammer. But I’d love to give so life to my Gloomhaven and upcoming Return to Dark Tower miniatures

Best to start small. You don't want to be like me and Kalel with a paint collection. So pick a miniature, decide on the colors, and then jump in. You can use brushes from Walmart or amazon. Actually hobby brushes tend to be more expensive then if you just buy a pack of brushes at walmart. For paint you need a primer first. I have seen some people use rustoleum or other spray can primers from hardware stores. Be careful with the spray can. They are weather dependant. If it's too hot the primer will dry mid-flight and leave a gritty appearance. Generally 60s maybe low 70s is what you want. If you vet really into it an airbrush solves that problem.

For the paints I recommend sticking to acrylics. Easier to work with, readily available, and non-toxic. Games Workshop and Vallejo are my top recommendations. GW is particularly noob friendly because they have simple to use guides for every color. Plus they are a one stop shop for everything. As for the colors try to say find the shade of red you want. Then go one level darker, and find one to 2 levels higher. Paint the darkest color first on top of the primer. Then paint you main color leaving the darker red for example in the recesses, where shadows would normally be. Then paint the lighter reds on raises areas where the light would catch. If you go for more then 1 highlight apply the lighter colors to the higher raised areas. So for example with a red you would use orange as like the max level highlight and you would only apply it to the raised details that would be hit by light the most.

It really depends.

If you want to play GW games specifically? Yes, it tends to be expensive and can become VERY expensive. @Commissar SFLUFAN is correct in that you can find some stuff on ebay for less than MSRP, especially older kit. Also when new "big boxes" drop that have multiple factions, it's common that someone will buy the box and sell half of the sprues if they're only interested in one of the sides in the box. Unless you go boot or pirate, you'll also need to get the codexes / rules for your faction(s).

If you're interested in just mini painting broadly, you can get into the hobby very economically. Reaper / Bones minis can be had for a couple bucks a pop. The sculpts won't be as good / nice as ones from GW or something like Star Wars Legion, but you're also not on the hook for something like $20+ for a mini, so it's a decent place to start. Historical wargaming minis also tend to be significantly cheaper than anything branded / copyrighted.

There's also the option of not buying a "miniatures game" but take board game you're into that comes with some miniatures, and start there. I just picked up Unfathomable and will be painting the minis in that (Unfathomable is obviously a "bad value" if you're using it to get into mini painting specifically, but I think you get what I mean).

You can get by starting on relatively inexpensive brushes, but I wouldn't skimp on whatever you use to prime / paint. You don't need to go as stupid as my setup from the other (I have literally hundreds of bottles of paint) but something like this would be good place to start. Vallejo quality is very good and that color selection is very nice. A rattlecan of primer from GW, Army Painter, Tamiya, Vallejo, etc., will not do you wrong. You'll also need a varnish / sealant. I use Testor's dullcote, but there are lots of options.

There are tons of really good tutorials online and a lot of them cater to beginners. I'd recommend Sorastro and you can take a look at his older, Imperial Assault series, as he targets that to beginners specifically. His later videos are a little more advanced, but the Legion series tends to not be too crazy. I'm recommending the Star Wars ones only because I think most people are familiar with what Star Wars characters / creatures look like and Sorastro tends to stick to screen accurate schemes for those games. So even if you're not interested in painting Star Wars, it's a good place to start to see how he gets from bare plastic to something you're probably familiar with seeing. Same probably applies to his Marvel Crisis Protocol series, but he uses fancier techniques like non metallic metal more regularly in those videos.

Mentally, I think it's healthy to start with a "two cakes theory" approach to mini painting:

Two_cakes_rule_of_fandom.png

If you're following a tutorial it's likely that your first minis won't look anywhere near as good as whatever you're following, but they'll still look loads better than bare plastic. It's also important to keep in mind that you generally play mini / tabletop games at arms length and not at painting distance, so your fuck ups and derpiness won't be as visible to others as they are to you when you're painting.

The TL/DR... if you find yourself overburdened with time and money, mini painting / gaming CAN solve that problem! But it doesn't have to, just depends on what you want to play and what your goals are.

I'd check my post above this one.

I'm pretty sure Sorastro has Gloomhaven PDF guides, though that may be because I back him on Patreon? I'm sure there are other guides out there.

Even if all you did with the Gloomhaven minis was prime them white / grey, then base coat them in a single color that matches one of the primary colors on their playmat, and then gave them a wash with something like Nuln Oil from GW or with Amy Painter's strong tone, they'd look much better than grey plastic and the characters would look different from each other on the table. Or you could make them look like pewter / metal minis with a metallic paint job and a wash. Either of those approaches could take you a few minutes of active time and however long it takes to dry. There's no need to go apeshit with object source lighting, a ton of layering, etc.

My biggest tips for beginners are:

1) Prime well but not too close / thick so you don't obscure details. If you prime in black it's easier to make sure you don't miss a spot and some of the recesses look like shadows by default, but it can be a bitch to bring a black prime back up to white, yellow, or red

2) When you're using your paints, you will need to thin them more than you're likely expecting. Some people say like milk / melted ice cream. It's hard to describe. You want them thick enough to not need to do a billion layers for your base coat on top of your primer, but thin enough so the paint doesn't obscure the detail with gloopiness

3) For me at any rate, a lot of it really is mental, so set the right expectations or have specific goals with each mini. Even with minis of mine that I really like, it's very difficult for me to not "see" my brushstrokes and look at a finished mini as a whole thing. I don't have this issue when I look at other minis people have painted, even when I can see their brushstrokes. It's a weird phenomenon. Dooku from Legion is one of my favorite minis and I think he looks good, but I have to really condition myself to not see the steps I took to get there. Maybe it's only me that has this issue, but I do have to remind myself of the two cakes thing from my other post. My goal with Dooku was to have his face come out well, which I think I did, but when I look at him I get distracted by the highlights I did on his pants (even though i think they look fine :p ) So I have to remind myself that my goal with this was "good face" and that I accomplished it

GW is the most expensive (but also the most popular).

But other companies make great games that are much cheaper. Mantic Games has great deals on starter army boxes. So does bolt action.

Para-Bellum games makes Conquest: Last Argument of Kings. I actually got a bunch of these models (and a Black Templars army set along with Helbrecht and Grimaldus and some troop choices) from my wife to add to my Conquest army.

And honestly, if you just want a simple wargame to paint and play, their models are absolutely beautiful, and the game is incredibly fun and easy to play.  And people love Star Wars Legion, so thats another game you should be able to find a community for. I started buying Empire units after I got back off the water earlier this month.

If you would prefer something other than GW, I would look at local shops and see what games others are playing. If you're going to get into spending money on a wargame, you definitely want to have a community built in to play with.

My first painted space marine. I'm not done yet. Need to do the bolter, arms, and shoulder pads.

Nice job!

Im now building a new Black Templars force, and will be adding them here as I paint them.

I love 30k. I have a Night Lords army I love, as well a Sons of Horus force I need to build and paint eventually. I just don't have many friends who play Horus Heresy.

Keep posting, I love seeing others work (im an average painter at best).

I live in NJ so there is a decent sized 30k community. Plus I do plan to pull double duty and use em in 40k. However my new meds have me being a super mega loner. I don't even care if I never play I just want to paint and assemble.

I like most of the legions and the other armies like Solar Auxilia and such. So between HH, WFB returning, and Specialist games I should be good for the rest of my life hobby life.

Almost done with the Raven Guard just needs highlighting but since Warno was announced and I had the hull taunting me I decided to finish my RPG Model 1/35 T-80U. I'll post some pics once the hull is done. I am unsure how to paint it just yet so have to work that out.

Had to purchase the kit again because I kept losing alot of the little bits. These are the kind of things GW doesn't put on their vehicle kits. I am having fun assembling it but have had like 5 heart attacks over the little bits in the pic.

Ya, small bits are a headache. I hate dealing with things like purity seals.

Im currently painting up a 3rd box of Primaris Crusaders for my Black Templars. Also airbrushing some Tau in preparation for the new codex, and im trying to decide if im taking them, my BT, or my my Custodes to Adepticon. Guess I have to see the new Chapter Approved first.

I wish I was a good painter. I'm average at best. I see some peoples work, and its almost depressing 😆

My friend is an incredible painter. He needed some Lootas and Flash Gitz, so I gave him two spare boxes of each I had.

He tried to pay me, I refused, instead I asked him to build and paint my Telemon dread and blade champion. He didn't start my blade champion yet, but he just sent me a picture of the finished Telemon.

Hobby progress has been temporarily put on hold so I can catch up on From Software games. Normal service is expected to resume in the next week or so. Want to beat DS3 and Sekiro. Take a break and jump into DS2.

That Dread looks amazing. @BloodyHell I want to do custodes for 30k. Should be fast and easy.

Getting ready for a tournament next weekend. Lists need to be finalized before Monday. Today i have to put finishing touches on Vanguard Veterans and Terminator Assault Squads  and my third redemptor dreadnought is missing(the impulsor and emperors  champion aren't part of the list), and the basing will be happening this week. Im just waiting on a delivery of flocking and hobby rocks.

I was trying to decide between my crusher stampede and Custodes, but then realized I don't get to play my Templars nearly enough. I haven't had time to really look at my Tau codex, but having played against them this week, im confident they can hard counter the current rail gun meta because BT are so good at exploiting the bodyguard rule, and at good at buffing with great litanies. Looking forward to the first tournament of the new season.

Sorry for the bad pics. I have zero experience with cameras.

The first pic is okay but the 2nd pic is focused on the box not the minis. Are you using a smart phone or a digital camera? If it's a smart phone you can touch on what you want to focus on. For digital cameras you need to point at what you want to focus on.

Ok I need to dab on Malena (kicking my ass) and the final boss. The 2nd ed of Horus Heresy has been announced. A bunch of Forgeworld kits are last chance to buy and they are most likely what wr will get in plastic.

The quicker they get rid of resin, the better.

So, I picked up the Chaos Army Box, because obviously I needed another army, but I did want knights.

Also started a Star Wars Legion Empire force, but its just the original box set with some extra Death Troopers and stuff I picked up. Im yet to paint them or play the game.

Just ordered Age of Darkness box set. It's about damn time they released Horus Heresy in plastic. I hate working with resin. Ive been wanting to paint a Night Lords army for a while. Time to find out which purplish colors and shades I want to use.

Working on War Dog Karnivores today, as I have the house to myself all weekend. Finished magnetizing all my knights and sculpting bases, now its time to start airbrushing the bodies in Leadbelcher.

Can't wait to get the box set. I'll wait a bit for kratos tanks. It's already gonna take all summer to finish my knights and this set, plus im also waiting on squats, so im sure that'll cost. And they  are showing new Imperial Guard units im going to need for my guard force.

Those Kasrkins are so good. I gotta get em. I use karskinsquad as a username in some games and on reddit. I have a metal squad but these are so good.

I'm actually glad I got the Rhino and Kratos. They are out of stock and it's hard to say how long it will take for a restock.

Though I question the wisdom of throwing my whole paycheck at GW. I got a discount on everything but was painful but YOLO. (Atleast I hope I don't wanns do this shyt again)
