Remember when she got pissed at a bunch of kids for coming to her office to advocate for climate action?

And this is a total internal party power thing, right?

Newsom would appoint her hypocritical replacement and there is virtually no chance that replacement would lose to a Republican when the seat came up again?

Republicans haven't had a candidate for the Senate make a general election since 2012

So, obviously this is bad, but it's made 10x worse because of the INCREDIBLY FUCKING DUMB RULES/TRADITION of giving senior members the top positions. Why should the senior ranking Democrat be in charge of judicial appointments? Why not a person with the most experience in the area?

I swear, the US system is such a joke. In Canada we have the opposite problem (if it's a problem), where the "boys in short pants" are derided by Members of Parliament for basically running the Prime Minister's Office and ordering them around on votes. The "boys" in this case are usually people in their 20s and 30s who run the PMO and have the energy and gumption to get things done. Stephen Harper and Justin Trudeau both have this policy, of staffing their office with younger people who then take charge and effectively run the PMO and set policy.

I mean it isn't to say that the US only has old people running things--often these senators and representatives have small armies of young staffers who do the vast majority of the work. But the seats filled and votes cast by these senators and congresspersons largely on the democratic side, and especially in democratic leadership, are by these dinosaurs who stick around in their posts for *decades*. This is a problem because it stunts the growth of the bench to the detriment of the party all so Dianne and nancy and hoyer and clyburn can retain their positions.

The GOP has been doing this shit right! Since 2003 (!!!!) The democratic house has had 3 people, the same 3 people, in leadership. In that same time, Republicans have had 8. Instructively, one of whom became a senator (roy blunt) when the senate seat opened up in his state of MO when the incumbent was about 70 and retired. Two of them were criminals and resigned in disgrace (this is the republican party after all), two retired on their own, one was primaried and is no longer in government, and the last two are in power now, both age 55. Now I'm not saying AOC or someone similarly young needs to be in leadership, but hakeem jefferies (as much of a corporate stooge as pelosi) would be a vast improvement on this front, as would someone like Pramila Jayapal or Mark Pocan, both in their mid 50's and more in line with the democratic party base ideologically
