  1. Get your heads out of your asses! Small electric planes are the future of intercity transit. Although I'd personally like to see more dirigibles in the air.
  2. The California high speed rail project would like to have a word with you.
  3. Because it's less convenient, and often times slower, than other modes of transport. If I wanted to take rail from Las Vegas to San Diego, there will not be a direct, non-stop route. It's going to probably make stops in Barstow, Victorville, 3 (or more) stops in Los Angeles, and Orange County before actually arriving in San Diego. Direct flights are offered a dozen times a day between these two cities, and I can drive down to San Diego in about 5 hours if I time it right to not get stuck in Riverside.
  4. Some points: Upgrading electrical infrastructure and investing in electrical vehicles is a huge plus. But inter-city rail? That is just pipe-dream boondoggle.
  5. I woke up this morning not feeling very well. Swimmy head, headache, very weak. I'm 99% sure this is related to my 2nd dose, and to comply with company policy, I stayed home. 3 other coworkers who also got the shot yesterday also ended up calling in sick for similar symptoms too.
  6. Pretty sure Matt Gaetz is just a malfunctioning droid of some sort. Splash some water on him and he'll just short circuit.
  7. I'm surprised they decided to launch during the heavy fog conditions. Not that this particular mishap would have been prevented if the air was clear, but it would make it a lot easier to find the potential cause if visibility was good. In other SpaceX news, a press conference was held this morning that announced the last 2 of 4 astronauts that will fly aboard a privately chartered Dragon spacecraft. The launch is supposed to occur as early as September and last 3 or so days. It's a free flying mission, so it won't be visiting the Space Station. This mission will mark the first 100% commercial manned mission (no government/military astronauts), and it will also include the youngest American to ever fly in space - a 29 year old cancer survivor. The Dragon is also going to have a badass cupola window where the docking port would normally be, for 180 degree views for its passengers.
  8. I get my 2nd Moderna tomorrow. My workplace has a 100% do not come into work if you have ANY COVID-like symptoms, so I'll likely have to take some of Tuesday and maybe Wednesday off if I have any side effects and/or symptoms.
  9. Elon and the FAA throw shade at each other like they've been married for 32 years.
  10. It's fairly rare to have a second stage reenter over land. Most of the time these launch companies will intentionally deorbit over the ocean, but this one failed to relight it's engine after it's mission was over, leaving it in orbit for an extended period of time.
  11. Most semi-auto pistols have a barrel that pivots like that - it's part of how the action works and how the breach can remain locked in battery when a round is fired. There are videos on youtube that can explain it better than I can. Edit: The reason there is even a classification for short barreled rifles and shotguns in the NFA, was because when Congress was originally drafting this legislation, they intended to include handguns in the act. In order to prevent a loophole situation from happening, Congress added the short barreled definition, so people wouldn't just go and buy a small-ish rifle (not subject to NFA), and hack off the buttstock and most of the barrel. Ultimately the pistol language was removed, but for whatever reason the short barreled language stayed in and became law.
  12. To be considered a rifle, it needs a buttstock and a barrel length over 16 inches. It would be a "short barreled rifle" if it has a buttstock and a barrel length under 16 inches (also requires a $200 tax stamp and a 3 to 6 month wait) It is a pistol if: It was never originally manufactured as a rifle, has no buttstock, and a barrel length less than 16 inches. This is all based on the 1930's era National Firearms Act which regulated machine guns, short barreled rifles, short barreled shotguns, and silencers.
  13. It's a pistol in name only - it's still gigantic compared to even the largest "real" pistols on the market. Here is the AR pistol I built last year, compared to my 9mm pistol. Banana for scale:
  14. Ctrl+Pew on Twitter is a good showcase for how the art/science of 3d printing guns has advanced over the last few years. The designs have evolved well past the first examples that were only capable of firing once. Edited link because D1P posted Ctrpew's entire Twitter page. 56k warning!
  15. I'm not saying that. There are a lot of things we can do that would not only lower gun homicides, but be good for American society as a whole: Universal healthcare, including mental health. End the war on drugs, legalize prostitution, and other vices that create violent black markets. Economically invest in neighborhoods where crime is rampant. Enact a "DIY" background check system.
  16. I guess it depends on the situation. The Virginia Tech shooter murdered 19 with pistols. The Washington Navy Yard shooter murdered 12 with a pump shotgun. No matter what, it's a horrible situation.
