  1. Appropriate since we're near Christmas, but many people don't know that one of the classic Christmas carols (Carol of the Bells) is actually a Ukrainian carol set to a pagan folk song called Shchedryk. It's beautiful in Ukrainian: Yesterday actually marked the 100th anniversary of its first performance in the United States. And if you're looking for a patriotic song, Oh, the Red Kalyna in the Meadow (kalyna is a flowering tree that is considered a national symbol) is a patriotic march created for the nascent Ukrainian nation in the early 20th century which was then banned by the Soviet Union, but survived to resurface after Ukrainian independence:
  2. I refuse to watch purely based on the thumbnail. I assume it's a rage-bait video detailing that they pitched an "annoying" female lead or something?
  3. It appears that the Ukrainians used a Tu-141 Strizh UAV to strike 600km into Russia (to hit the strategic bombers at the Engels airfield). It's a Soviet-made rocket drone from the 1970s that the USSR retired in 1989. However, Ukraine had a stockpile, and since 2014 has been working on fixing and using them. There are rumours that Ukraine is even building new ones. If Ukraine was able to fly a drone from the 70s 600km-deep into Russia during wartime and hit their target...it raises big questions about Russia's air defense.
  4. I would argue that the British deserve more of the blame (and I do use the word blame intentionally, not credit) for English as the lingua franca of the world. And while its use is very beneficial for nations that exclusively use it...more harm than good has come because of the underlying reasons for it being lingua franca.
  5. Yeah, totally unacceptable. The option of MAID should be there for almost anyone who wants it, provided they have either a terminal illness or a chronic, untreatable illness that affects quality of life. But pushing it on people because there aren't other forms of financial assistance to help them live better lives is criminal.
  6. Only slightly related to the thread, but... I decided to try buying a GPU directly from AMD on their online store, now that I am doing a new build...and managed to massively luck out. Logged in to find an RX 6950 XT for only $1070 CAD ($790 USD), which is $400 off MSRP (in Canada). 27% off. I'm not planning on completing the new build until Jan/Feb...but if I can get a 6950XT for less than a 6800XT, then I'm jumping on it, lol!
  7. It appears the attacks are not just on infrastructure, but on apartment buildings, as well. Apartments in Kkharkiv and Zaporizhzhzia hit. Strikes near Odessa have taken out power in Moldova.
  8. Huge missile attack on civilian locations today from Russia. Possibly over 200 missiles. 13 aircraft launched 8 cruise missiles each, and then another 100 or so from the Caspian Sea area. In good news, it appears that (somehow) Ukraine carried out two strikes on Russian airbases inside Russia, including against strategic bombers/tankers on the runway. No confirmation, but it's believed that four Russian large planes were damaged.
  9. US has about 12x the GDP of Canada, with about 9x the pop. What are you smoking? I always forgot this user exists until they make an OP.
  10. Yeah, made a typo. I get all that you're saying...but it doubles the price. I've never once upgraded a CPU in a single generation, I've always waited for a new gen (usually every 4 years).
  11. Huge loss for Netflix. There were rumours that there was tension, with Netflix demanding he make his shows "more scary" (jump scares, specifically), and he refused. IMO his current style of spooky atmosphere (with occasional scare) is perfect. Hill House and Midnight Mass are incredible, and Bly Manor and Midnight Club were great, as well. He also made some cryptic tweets when Midnight Club came out implying he was unhappy with Netflix's promotion. That wouldn't be surprising, as Netflix is absolutely garbage at promoting their own shows, even inside their own app. Flanagan has said for years that his personal passion project hope is The Dark Tower...well, guess who owns the rights to that?
  12. How much of this (in the past) was cops pinning a dead body on the first Black person they could find? Not that I think cops haven't gotten worse...but I also suspect they were never that good to begin with.
