  1. These people don't care because they will continue to publicly insist they are innocent (what punishment is there for that? Nothing), and they already have the connections and money to not have to apply for a job on paper.
  2. It seems that deaths roughly follow 4 weeks after diagnosis, at around 2% of diagnosis. So I'd expect the death bump to take place late next week in the US, if it does.
  3. The correct counter to this is (always): commerce is a side-effect of people living together. People (idiots) will claim that unless we give corporations and rich people more money (in the form of tax breaks, etc) then our local communities will be abandoned. But it's total bullshit. Wherever people live there will be a demand for commerce, and if one company leaves then another will take its place. You can use tax policy to encourage new HQs or facilities, but it's a race to the bottom. No matter how a local community treats any specific group of rich people, other rich people (or non-rich people) will fill the vacuum to provide services.
  4. Trump is reportedly considering a pardon for the Trump Organization's chief financial officer NEWS.YAHOO.COM Over the last six weeks, so many people have been calling and emailing the West Wing seeking pardons that White House staffers have had to create a spreadsheet to keep track of the requests, CNN reports."It's turned crazy," one person familiar with the matter said. "There's a lot of activity." The queries have been coming in from business associates close to Trump as well as high-profile criminals, CNN reports, and when...
  5. I 100% don't believe any antibody study since there have been a lot of problems with the actual tests used, but I do believe both the cases and deaths are higher than the official numbers. As an example, the official death toll so far is 308k, but there are over 400k excess deaths in the US this year. Cases are probably 1.5-2x as high as reported, I would guess, especially since there were clearly a huge number of people infected in the beginning before the initial spring lockdowns took place (based on deaths).
  6. Jesus: US sets new daily records of 3,700 Covid deaths, 250,000 cases WWW.ALJAZEERA.COM About five percent of the US population has contracted the virus, or close to 17 million people.
  7. "It works, common sense says so, it's just that we haven't given enough money to the rich," is the more likely GOP/rich response.
  8. I really hate that people are blaming the overdoses (and suicides in the US) on the lockdowns/restrictions instead of the pandemic. What, these idiots think that people wouldn't be staying home more (and being more isolated) even if there were no restrictions? The less restrictions there are and the faster the virus spreads, the more that people are going to voluntarily stay home and be isolated. Having said that, most governments clearly do not have enough support systems in place for addiction treatment and mental health.
  9. Unless you've operated on someone or have a giant metal orb with electricity in a secret lab, then you're not a doctor, pleb!
  10. ‘We want them infected’: Trump appointee demanded ‘herd immunity’ strategy, emails reveal - POLITICO WWW.POLITICO.COM Then-HHS science adviser Paul Alexander called for millions of Americans to be infected as means of fighting Covid-19. Monsters who deserve the firing squad.
  11. Many governments have this flawed view of "if we put in a lockdown for a month, all businesses will close because people won't be going out." The reality is...people are already not going out in great enough numbers for businesses to stay afloat, and instead of a month it's been almost a year. The places that have had the strongest restrictions have had the best bounce back (keeping some protections in place to prevent new outbreaks). The flaw from the start was assuming that as long as the economy was legally open, that everyone would be spending 100% of their money. It's like, fuck, yeah I could go to the theatres right now, or go to a restaurant (with bullshit 2m distancing that doesn't work), but I'm not because I actually give a shit about my health and the health of my loved ones. Make it safe (by eliminating the virus) and I will do those things.
  12. Check this out. It's a short video celebrating the seatbelt (specifically the three-point belt now standard) by Volvo. It's estimated that it's saved 1 million lives, but there was a massive fight against them when they were first mandated; they were called a violation of human rights. Crazy how stupid people have been stupid forever, and how similar the resistance is to anti-virus health orders.
  13. So... Neighbour in Florida threaten to sue if Trump moves in...and they have the legal grounds to do so. Trump's would-be neighbors fight to keep him from living at Mar-a-Lago - The Washington Post WWW.WASHINGTONPOST.COM The feud over whether Trump has the right to live at his Palm Beach club reaches a boiling point. Lmao So he can live there, but he'd have to close down the club and resort.
  14. Hey I didn't know she was Canadian. This will help counter the evil Canadian, Ted Cruz.
  15. It kind of sounds like Biden is appointing people that wanted to be in the cabinet...but in totally different positions than where their expertise lay (not that Pete is really an expert at any of these things). I don't really get it.
  16. As a follow-up to my earlier question about the US rollout, Fauci confirmed today that the US should have the capability to get around 230 million doses to the public by the end of June, which is in line with Canada (per capita). This is great news, and hopefully enough of the public takes up the offer.
  17. Nope: Joe Biden picks Pete Buttigieg to be transportation secretary WWW.CNN.COM President-elect Joe Biden will nominate Pete Buttigieg to be his transportation secretary, sources familiar with the matter tell CNN, elevating the former South Bend, Indiana, mayor and 2020 Democratic presidential candidate to a top post in the federal government.
  18. Good news. The reason it is going to the northern territories and Indigenous communities is that the Pfizer vaccine cannot due to requiring lab freezers (which they do not have).
  19. Also some good news from the Moderna trials: There was some question as to whether or not the vaccine simply protects the recipient, or whether or not it also prevents transmission. It appears it does: I mean that makes sense since a vaccine simply teaches the body to detect and destroy the virus. If the immune system is killing the virus enough to prevent illness, it should also be preventing it from reproducing enough to shed to other people. But nice to have some data supporting that.
  20. Looks like the Moderna vaccine will be approved and shipped in the next few weeks in Canada: Assuming they have similar numbers as the Pfizer vaccine, that should allow us to get around 20% of the pop vaccinated by the end of Q1, the finish by the end of Q3. There are a few other vaccines that could be approved and used here, but I believe just the Pfizer and Moderna contracts alone will cover 100% vaccination by Q4.
  21. That is my biggest fear right now, my wife or I just slipping and falling on the sidewalk or something and needing emergency services and not being able to receive them.
  22. I read this morning that the US only plans to vaccinate around 100 million people by the end of 2021, does anyone have any sources to back this up or refute it? That seems...low, considering Canada anticipates to have everyone inoculated by the end of Q3. I read it was something to do with orders and contracts, but I can't find anything concrete.
